A tinted photograph of a single Noh performer on what appears to be a traditional wooden stage. The performer wears a pale, layered garment with wide sleeves, resembling a formal kimono ensemble, and a white mask with a calm expression. The mask covers the entire face, leaving only a slight gap around the jawline. The outfit’s upper layer is a light gray or blue robe with subtle decorative patterns, extending to knee length. The sleeves and collar display white embroidered details, while the performer’s lower garment seems to be a darker hue, partially visible near the feet. Traditional footwear, likely tabi socks and sandals, can be seen. A slim, possibly ceremonial fan or small instrument is held in one hand near the waist. The performer’s hair is arranged in a stylized manner or is part of the mask, with a small ornamental piece on top. The background shows wooden walls and a ceiling typical of a Noh theater, with muted tones that frame the performer. The words “JAPON A 6589” are written at the top edge of the photograph. Some discoloration and dark spots appear around the border, suggesting age or damage to the plate. The overall scene conveys a moment from a classical Japanese Noh performance, emphasizing the refined costume, mask, and stage setting.

Noh singing is not just a vocal technique—it’s a neurological and emotional experience. The controlled breath, sustained tones, and rhythmic chanting don’t just shape the performance but alter consciousness itself. Both performers and listeners enter a state of deep focus, calm, and introspection.

DEC 24 2023: Went to the #OhoriPark #Noh Theater to see a performance of #Hyakuman. No (Noh?) photography allowed inside but I did this little sketch of the stage before the performance began.

A sketch of a Noh theater stage. There is a raised stage, with a short barrier surrounding it like a fence. There is a perimeter of small stones surrounding the stage on the floor level where the audience sits. There is a small stairway of about three steps leading from the floor level to the stage, and some bamboo plants are in the background.

A performer in traditional Japanese Noh theater attire is shown wearing an ornate golden kimono with intricate floral patterns. Their face is painted white with dramatic red and black accents around the eyes and lips, resembling a traditional Noh mask. Their black hair is styled elaborately with golden hairpins. The background features a traditional Japanese interior with a painted scroll depicting flowers and foliage. The performer's posture is poised, evoking elegance and cultural depth.

The hannya mask is one of the most recognisable noh masks with its two prominent horns. It is named after its creator, Hannya-bō, and represents a female character whose anger or jealousy has caused horns to grow on her head.

"Chanting Beyond Melody: The Neurological and Emotional Depth of Noh Vocal Technique"

Noh, a form of classical Japanese musical drama, is notable for its distinct vocal techniques, which are integral to both its aesthetic and emotional impact. The singing style, called utai, is a crucial element in conveying the narrative, emotions, and symbolic dimensions of the performance. My essay explores the specifics of Noh singing technique, as well as the physiological, psychological, and neurological effects it has on both performers and listeners. ...

Blogkino: Throne Of Blood (1957)
