"It is not possible to prioritize everyone.

Every decision has tradeoffs, and it’s clear who those choices prioritize when you consider the comfort, ease, and safety of different users. When it’s faster, easier, safer, and more comfortable to get somewhere by driving, we are prioritizing driving." --Anna Zivarts

New book arrived today “When driving is not an option” by @Nondriver

Although from a US rather than UK context am hoping it will transfer - the way that involuntary non drivers are made invisible is much the same here.

Also there is a tendency for car ppl not previously interested in disability access to oppose sustainable transport measures because ‘disabled people need cars’ and am hopeful for some insights to help navigate this area.

By my friend Anna Zivarts, "Don’t Forget About Non-Drivers in Rural America". Aging population, housing prices, needs of nondrivers all come together in rural America.

This should be great! Book talk Aug. 28 with my friend Anna Zivarts, author of When Driving Is Not an Option, offered by Jonathon Stalls, author of WALK: Slow Down, Wake Up, and Connect at 1-3 Miles Per Hour. I went to a reading and walk audit when Jonathon came to my new hometown of Olympia a while back.

I think a lot about the “Seattle Transportation Plan” basically threw out all the work folks have been doing for a decade+ to get some consensus on bike and pedestrian infra that should exist. Imperfect infra but better. There are maps with bike routes that will never exist in any real sense just as there are many many blocks of sidewalks that will only come into being if a big multi-family development happens adjacent. But the roads for people who can drive are already there. #nondrivers

Big mega transportation projects primarily benefiting people who drive just roll along and get most of the money but the projects for non-drivers are often crumbs we’re expected to cheer for and even bigger projects are easily cut when money is tight. Thanks Kimberly for this framing.

While I acknowledge there have been some improvements for bike-ped in Seattle, I don't think advocacy organizations are really taking seriously how screwed a lot of us are feeling about shit like the Roanake lid getting yanked, the waterfront under-delivering, etc.I know the model. Celebrate the wins and keep on. But the wins are always crumbs, and often the wins we are asked to celebrate are future deliverables that evaporate. Like the waterfront, like the lid, like the way the E Union PBL was executed.Barbara Bailey, where it's unusual if there aren't cars parked on the plaza. Something mere bollards would prevent. The list is long. I am tired of celebrating crumbs and never getting served an appetizer, let alone a fucking main dish or entire meal. And, in fact, being promised a main dish and then being served a cold crumb from last week's special that's probably not legal to serve according to health department guidelines.

And this is actually a good metaphor because the public health implications are real. As are the climate implications. Etc.

I never really liked driving and would use a bus or bike as often as was not terribly worse but until 2018 it was an option to drive. My partner often can still drive me places but I too often get so angry when I look up how to get some place and realize I can spend 2-3 times as long to get there or ask my partner or just not go.

Anyway get Anna’s book! Be ready to write your elected officials often after. :)

As much as I appreciated being closer to family, to family, the move away from a city where transit access had given me near-equivalent mobility with my
nondisabled friends was difficult. In Seattle, I felt resentful every time I looked up directions on how to get somewhere on the bus and my phone showed it would take two to three times as long as it would if could drive there.
What would be a fifteen-minute drive would be an hour-and-a-half, multi-bus trip, where missing bus shelters meant me and my toddler would be waiting on the side of a loud arterial in the rain, covered in grit from the puddle splashes of passing Subarus.

Observations above are the kinds of things I now cannot avoid recognizing. Side effect of working in transportation and thinking directly every single day about the needs of people who can't or don't drive. The book to give transportation professionals who don't notice these things or don't recognize who benefits and who is burdened by their decisions: islandpress.org/books/when-dri.

New book by Anna Zivarts is all about #nondriving & #nondrivers

From the #book blurb: "One third of people living in the United States do not have a #driverLicense... and they are largely invisible. [...]The consequence of this invisibility is a #mobility system designed almost exclusively for #drivers... Zivarts shows that it is critical to include people who can’t drive in #transportation planning decisions"
