I've been working through this one again gradually as a complement to the MMTCP Training I'm doing and in which the practice of #RAIN features quite prominently. Now that I have more practice under my belt, I'm struck by how versatile the practice truly is and how it not only is connected to other practices (such as #tonglen, and, less explicitly, Nonviolent Communication #NVC), but also complements and is complemented by these same practices.

I believe strongly in Non-Violent Communication as a framework for life.

One aspect of that is telling someone that their actions aren't meeting your needs in a way that is non-violent, such as "When you show up thirty minutes later than we said we'd meet, I feel frustrated because my need for respect, and safety aren't met. Can you give me your word that you'll show up on time from now on?"

The other person doesn't have to respond positively to your strategy, but if they don't, or get angry or respond in some other way that doesn't meet your need, then the onus is on you to decide what to do.

It moves control for getting your needs me from the other person back to you, and while that can be difficult at first, it's ultimately very empowering.

I'm so grateful that years ago, I learned Non-Violent Communication.

While I'm not always able to do it, or always able to do it well, being able to put on my "giraffe ears" is a crucial skill not only in personal relationships, but it can be in business as well.

Understanding the needs of others, whether they're collaborative partners, potential customers, suppliers, or staff, can make a huge difference. It shifts problematic actions away from "Ugg they're so annoying" or "Why won't they just do what we want?" to "I wonder what need of theirs isn't being met that's leading to this communication from them?"

By understanding the needs behind the words, we can bring empathy and care where there was only annoyance and frustration.

Last night in our Nonviolent Communication study group we explored sincere gratitude - both giving and receiving.

It was a lovely module and I'm encouraged to more openly share with others when they have added beauty, care, understanding, compassion, joy to my life.

Speaking it out loud and connecting with those who create good in our worlds is critically important - now more than ever!

What kind of lesson are we teaching when we respond to creative expression with such aggressive judgment? What message does it send when we prioritize our own preferences to the point of silencing others? He is basically saying "You deserve to be censored because you have an animated AGI profile photo instead of your real-life photo." That's just rude!

Let's remember that online interactions, like any other, should be grounded in respect. We can disagree, we can have concerns, but we should always strive to communicate without resorting to personal attacks. If we are aiming to create a world where our children are able to create, then we must create a world where all are respected.

I saw a man declare in the Fediverse that they were blocking anyone using Studio Ghibli-style profile pictures because their daughter is learning to draw.

As a creative who uses AI to enhance my branding, including a Ghibli-inspired avatar for my Coffee With Crissy podcast, I was immediately labeled as an enemy. My passion for Miyazaki's films, a love I've carried for decades, was met with hostility. And I don't know this man but he's decided to hate me.

The irony of someone expressing concern for their daughter's artistic development while simultaneously spewing hateful words online is not lost on me.
