I looked out the window & there was a Northern Flicker sheltering from the rain on our balcony!

Gray, brown bird with black spots, a black cheek, red on the back of the head, and bright gold highlights in the feathers, and a long beak. Flying downward with wing feathers spread. A few bare tree branches and the bird in the lower left of the frame, blue sky filling the remainder of the frame.

The Northern Flicker. This colourful member of the woodpecker family recently visited my pond. They are tree nesters and feed on the ground. Their favorite meal is ants.

Seen from behind, a stripy brown-backed woodpecker perches on a lichen-covered branch, head turned back towards us.

His weird little tongue. 📷🌿🪶

A photo of a male northern flicker (Colaptes auratus), a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray face and a long beak, red cheek patches, a red spot on the back of its head, a large black bar across its chest, black barring across its back and wings, and black polka dots all over its belly. It is perched on a thin bare tree branch facing to the right of frame with its beak open mid-yawn and it's long, thin tongue visible curling upward. In the background a pale, cloudy gray sky is overexposed.

Northern flicker in my yard! I thought I had spotted two of them flying away from me at one point yesterday and sure enough. They are really cool birds.

The new bird friend that visited yesterday, and the resident Stellar's Jay.

From my research last night I feel very confident in saying this is a male red-shafted Northern Flicker.

SO excited to have a new bird friend.

Also saw this family of northern flickers in our alley. I don't know why, especially since I'm not superstitious, but I always associate flickers with good luck.

Apparently the regular woodpecker namers were on strike or something when they discovered these Northern Flickers, so they they aren't called Black-bibbed Woodpeckers or the Spotty-breasted Woodpeckers, and maybe that's why they don't act much like the other woodpeckers around here. They aren't nearly as shy, and you can often find them just strolling around on the ground pecking at the dirt. I haven't met every woodpecker out there, but these are definitely my favorite so far.

This northern flicker at our neighborhood park was digging in the dirt. He still has some mud stuck on his beak.

First Visitors

The first avian visitors to my birdbath have been a Northern Flicker and a couple of American Robins, although they seemed to be more interested in the adjacent plants than the fountain. One robin actually perched on the rim of the birdbath in order to drink from the drip tray of the nearest plant pot. I suspect they were attracted by the fountain but the hot weather made the still water an easier source of refreshment.
