▴ Whakaari / White Island

White Island (Whakaari) is New Zealand’s most active volcano, constantly venting steam and gas from its crater. This photo was taken in 2019, just a few months before the tragic eruption, making it an eerie reminder of the island’s unpredictable and raw volcanic power.

Stormy skies over Moturiki Island (or maybe “Island”, since we walked onto it) from the beach at Mount Maunganui. North Island, New Zealand. (And actually, I suspect “Motu” is Maori for “Island”, so with or without quotes it’s probably superfluous.)

This is Wairere Falls, the tallest falls on the North Island at 153m. We didn’t actually know anything about it, just saw it on the map and figured we’d check it out. After a long steep trail over lots of wet boulders we made it to this look out, where we decided against climbing the rest of the way to the top.

Climbing Mount Maunganui. Full disclosure: I did not climb Mount Maunganui. I climbed half way up Mount Maunganui, and then the stifling humidity convinced me that I would prefer to hike AROUND Mount Maunganui, which I did.

The image depicts a large group of men, most likely Maori people, seated on the banks of a river beneath a tree. The photograph appears to be black and white with an antique feel, suggesting it may have been taken several decades ago.
In this scene, various individuals are sitting casually in groups or pairs; some lean against each other for support while others sit upright. They display relaxed postures, many resting their legs on the ground or crossed at the ankles. Their clothing is simple and suited to a warm climate: sleeveless shirts, tank tops, shorts, and sandals.
Among them, several individuals are engaged in smoking cigarettes, indicated by visible smoke trails and hand positions holding lit cigarettes. The atmosphere seems informal as they engage with one another through conversation or shared activities.
In the background, there is an expansive landscape that includes a dry field extending to meet hills on the horizon under a hazy sky suggesting either dawn or dusk lighting conditions. On the tree branches above them hangs multiple bundles of eels, which could be indicative of their cultural practices and means of livelihood connected with fishing or trade.
Overall, this image captures a moment in time where these individuals are taking respite from activities to socialize together under natural surroundings that reflect simplicity and close-knit community life.

▴ Cape Reinga

Reaching Cape Reinga for sunrise wasn’t the easiest journey, given its remote location at the northernmost tip of New Zealand, but it was absolutely worth it. This dramatic headland is where the Tasman Sea meets the Pacific Ocean, creating swirling currents as the waters collide. In Māori culture, Cape Reinga holds deep cultural significance in Māori tradition, believed to be the place where spirits depart for their ancestral homeland.
