Had an interesting problem tonight. Friend of ours has an old desktop that runs Windows 7 with Norton 360.
Norton was whining about an expired subscription, but given (1) the probability they still support Win7 is low and (2) the only decent thing with Norton branding had 2 wheels and 0 windows, I gave it the flick.
Now Win7 is pretty old now. How about a modern OS? Win10 is pointless given support ends in October, and Win11 won't run here.
There was an Ubuntu 16.04 install, but again, pretty old. I had a 24.04 ISO so on that went.
Graphics card is a Nvidia GT218 [GeForce 310].
Wayland seemingly does not work. Using noveau drivers we got a black screen with only a mouse cursor under both Gnome and KDE sddm.
Console worked, but useless for the novice owner.
More research needed to troubleshoot. For now, GRUB has Win7 set as default, and Linux can wait another day.
