Maria Yudina (1899-1970), a celebrated Soviet pianist, was known for her intense, uncompromising style and independence. She championed modern music and taught at the Moscow Conservatory. A famous story tells how Stalin, after hearing her live Mozart radio performance, demanded an overnight recording just for him.
