we have *finally* gotten mdts installed in our brigade tankers, they aren't operational but it's not far off. I am running through the online training today and, well, it's not great

tonnes of repetition you need to go through to get modules ticked off, major things that are clearly misordered, and I have to wonder if it was even reviewed by a volunteer before it was pushed out

I continue to wonder how the service even maintains its rto status

Busy #nswrfs day today.

0900-1030: Firecall to smoke sighting in nearby valley. Turned out to be a smoke column on the other side of the district. Incident turned into impromptu NavEx. We nailed the target location for the truck that was responded to the other side. Their Captain was most appreciative on the radio.

1300-1630: Brigade training. Practice scenarios for upcoming district exercise. Gas bottle fire. Learnt new flame bending technique. Then EV battery fire on TOBAN day with flame escape into bush and spotting into houses.

Bushfire Prediction for NSW, see link for other states.

Today, AFAC News released the Bushfire Seasonal Outlook for Spring. Given the current wet conditions and an uncertain rainfall forecast, NSW is expected to have generally normal fire potential across the season.

In many areas of the state, grass fuel loads remain high following good growth over recent years. Above average temperatures during Spring could lead to rapid drying and pose significant risk of fast moving grass fires.

While elevated fire risk this Spring is mainly associated with grassland areas, forested regions impacted by the 2019/20 fire season have recovered to a point where, if conditions become dry, they could once again sustain dangerous fires.

If you live, work or are travelling through bush fire prone areas make sure you know what you will do if threatened by fires. Review and discuss your bush fire survival plan.

The RFS is aware of a landholder who is currently conducting a controlled sugar cane burn in the vicinity of Eviron Road, Duranbah. Fire agencies have received numerous Triple Zero calls regarding this burn, which is in close proximity to the M1 Motorway.

These burns are typically undertaken by farmers between June and November, before they harvest the cane, making it easier to process by removing the leaves and any excess organic material. Sugar cane fires can produce large smoke columns and are extremely visible.

If you are travelling through the area between the Tweed Shire and Clarence Valley, it is likely you'll spot sugar cane burning, please only call Triple Zero (000) if you see an unattended fire.

Rural Fire Service (RFS) confirms the death of a volunteer firefighter in the Walgett region.

The RFS volunteer was working on the Hudson Fire in the Walgett region when he was struck by a falling tree.

Fellow RFS members rendered first aid until ambulance crews arrived - the patient was then transported to a Lighting Ridge medical facility where he tragically passed away.

Commissioner Rogers has expressed his sincere sorrow at the passing of a dedicated volunteer who was helping to protect the community.

"This gentleman made the ultimate sacrifice. His tragic and untimely death is a solemn reminder about the dangers faced by our firefighters.”

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends and firefighting colleagues at this terrible time. We are offering every assistance to his family and fellow brigade members.”
