'Realism' certainly seems too trite for his style. In this picture, the hands are not modelled realistically. They are graphic representations, much closer to design and fonts. A font of hands in fact.

Same with the muscles. Rather than being modelled, they are constructed as visual prompts. Minimal marks. All about line rather than shading.

The base technology is very much the lithograph, not oils.
