loc.gov/item/2019698257/

This black and white photograph shows a narrow passageway between towering, dark rock formations. The perspective is from the ground level looking upwards towards the entrance of what appears to be an ancient structure or cave opening. There are no visible signs of modern-day alterations on these rocks; they look natural with some erosion marks indicating their age.

At the top right corner and bottom left side of the image, there's text in a non-Latin script that might provide additional context if transcribed accurately but is not legible here due to resolution limits. The overall impression suggests an exploration or adventure theme, potentially within Petra—a historical city known for its rock-cut architecture.

The photograph has been professionally framed and appears aged with some creases visible on the edges of the photo, indicating it may be a print from a negative dating back over a century ago, as indicated by "between 1898 and 1914" in the caption. The source is listed under 'American Colony (Jerusalem). Photo Department,' which likely refers to an archive or collection associated with that specific locale during those years.

The URL provided indicates it may be part of a larger digital gallery, possibly hosted on a website dedicated to historical photographs from Jerusalem and its vicinity during early 20th-century times.

Untitled photo, possibly related to: Son of sharecropper and sub tenant hanging up strung tobacco inside barn. Shoofly, North Carolina

#Shoofly #NorthCarolina #DorotheaLange #non-English #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177723

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an elderly woman inside what appears to be a barn or storage area. She stands in front of numerous hung tobacco leaves, which are likely drying for commercial purposes. The setting has rustic wooden walls with horizontal planks that show signs of wear.

The woman wears old-fashioned clothing: a long-sleeved shirt and pants made from worn-out fabric, suggesting she may be involved in manual labor or rural agricultural work. Her facial expression is one of contentment as she gazes towards the camera, possibly acknowledging the photographer's presence.

A single wooden pole lies on its side at her feet, adding to the rustic environment of the setting. The lighting appears dim with a stark contrast between light and shadow, emphasizing the texture of both her attire and the tobacco leaves hanging around her.

The photograph is labeled "Dorothea Lange," likely indicating that Dorothea Lange took this picture, which adds historical context as she was known for documenting various social issues during the early 20th century. The label also contains text in a non-English script at the top of the image but lacks clear information.

This scene seems to be part of her larger collection capturing rural life and agricultural practices, specifically focusing on sharecroppers' living conditions and work environments from around North C [...]

Son of tenant farmer hanging up strung tobacco inside the barn. Shoofly, Granville County, North Carolina

#Shoofly #GranvilleCounty #NorthCarolina #non-Latin #undefined #photography #DorotheaLange

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177723

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an individual lying down with their legs wrapped in what appears to be tobacco leaves, which are commonly used for smoking. The person's head is not visible within the frame of the photo. They seem to be situated on wooden beams or supports, possibly inside a barn or similar structure.

The setting suggests that this could be related to agricultural work involving tobacco cultivation and processing. The individual may have collapsed due to exhaustion or fatigue from labor-intensive tasks associated with handling heavy materials such as dried leaves or other forms of crop matter.

In the lower part of the image, there's handwritten text in a non-Latin script, which appears to read "Tobacco-8." This might be an indication that this photograph is part of a series documenting tobacco-related activities. The reference provided mentions Son of tenant farmer hanging up strung tobacco inside the barn and provides further context for understanding the image.

Overall, this picture captures a moment in agricultural life where manual labor likely plays a significant role, with potential implications on health and working conditions.

‘ Can there be an equality between genders?
Or is “equality of the genders” oxymoronic, making any fight for the equality of the genders self-defeating? Gender implies class, and class presupposes inequality. Fight rather for the deconstruction of gender it would get to the same place much faster.’

loc.gov/pictures/item/20177726

The black and white photograph captures a rural scene featuring an old tobacco barn with wooden rafters extending over the top. #Chinatown #SanFrancisco #Arnold #Chinese #EastAsian #third #non-EastAsian #Children #City&townlife #photography

loc.gov/item/2018705153/

This black and white photograph depicts three children standing on a sidewalk, likely within the Chinatown district of San Francisco during the late 1800s to early 1900s. The scene is set against an urban backdrop with storefronts displaying signs in Chinese characters.
The child on the left appears dressed warmly in what seems like traditional East Asian attire, including a wide-brimmed hat and layered clothing, holding onto another object that might be related to play or work. The middle child also wears similar clothing but lacks accessories such as hats and is interacting with one of their companions through either touch or speech.
The third child on the right stands apart from his peers, possibly in casual streetwear indicative of a non-East Asian cultural background. This individual seems engaged with something off-camera to their left-hand side, likely observing an activity outside the frame's view.
The overall atmosphere is that of everyday life during this historical period within Chinatown, capturing the essence and diversity found among urban communities at the time.

The image is a black and white photograph depicting an elderly man with visible signs of aging. He has deeply furrowed lines on his face, prominent cheekbones, and deep-set eyes that convey a sense of wisdom or contemplation. His hair appears to be gray, short in length, and slightly unkempt. The man's beard is also grey but fuller than the rest of his facial hair.
He wears what seems to be an indigenous woven garment with a fur collar around his neck, suggesting cultural attire possibly from Native American tribes. One hand rests on top of this garment while another supports him as he sits down, which gives the impression that he may have mobility limitations or is simply in a relaxed position.
The background is indistinct and dark, drawing all attention to the man's face and upper body. The lighting accentuates his facial features prominently against the shadowed backdrop, highlighting textures such as wrinkles on his skin and fibers of his clothing. There are no additional discernible objects or scenery elements within this composition which makes it a focused portrait.
The photograph is credited with information about Yakotlus--Quatsino c1914 November 13, indicating that the person portrayed may be from an indigenous community referred to as "Yakotlus" possibly known today under another name and documented in late November of 1914. It also mentions Edward S. Curtis (1 [...]
