#oakLeaf

I'm calling it a bit early - cooking needed to happen and so I needed to be out of the way.

so I say Oak Leaf won!

this one came out a bit rougher than I hoped, but still pretty good.
also, my fingers are green now since my green stamp pad was tiny and crappy.
but totally worth it, I think!

almost time to draw more flowers - when I was walking today, I saw that the blackthorn blossom has started 🙂 (a bit early - maybe because of the mild winter, I’m not sure)

I went for a walk and saw a small oak sapling, and it still held its leaves, albeit dried ones. It also had some acorn cups still attached - the insides of these had been eaten by something . Then there were the new buds as well, a sign of the coming spring 🙂

Cherry Gall

The cherry gall wasp (scientific name: Cynips quercusfolii) is a tiny gall wasp that causes growths, or ‘galls’, on the undersides of oak leaves. The grub remains in the gall after leaf-fall, emerging as an adult wasp in winter. This asexual generation will lay its eggs on the oak tree trunk, which eventually mature to the sexual generation; this generation mates and produces the more obvious galls. The galls look like red cherries and are about 2cm in diameter. The larvae of the wasp feed on the host tissues but cause little damage. The cherry gall wasp is common and can be found from July to October.

A lone oak branch with one leaf still hanging on can be a beautiful sight. The leaf may have been retained due to a phenomenon called marcescence, where tree parts are retained after they are dead and dry. The reasons for marcescence are not fully understood, but it is believed to be related to the tree’s response to sunlight and temperature cycles, as well as available water and nutrients. The sight of a single leaf hanging on a bare branch can be a symbol of resilience and perseverance, reminding us that even in the harshest of conditions, life can find a way to endure.
