-Baphomet is often mistaken for the devil.
In reality, Baphomet stands for balance within nature. Nature in their case encompasses everything.
Baphomet points upwards to the sky and downwards to the earth. Their lesson is simple, "As above, So below".
Baphomet is surrounded by symbols of duality, light and darkness, male and female, spirit and matter. The Latin words Solve (dissolve) and Coagula (unite) written on its arms express the eternal process of breaking down and reforming, the very heart of transformation. The flame on its head symbolizes the awakened consciousness, the illumination that comes from integrating opposites, while its wings mark the freedom of spirit. In this sense, Baphomet is not a figure of evil, but of wholeness, the reminder that all polarities can find harmony within.
-The Devil on the other hand, has a different message entirely. He sits atop a pillar to which two people are chained. A man and a woman, implying that all are suseptible to his influence.
They are chained to him as they are chained to their own indulgence.
One of his hands is raised, ready to give commands to his prisoners. While his other hand holds a torch to the ground. He does this to keep his prisoners in line, but it also symbolizes being led astray.
The Devil, by contrast, embodies the state of spiritual bondage. The chains that bind the man and woman are loose, showing that the prison is one of their own making, born of ignorance, fear, or indulgence. His torch pointing downward not only threatens but also symbolizes misdirection, the misuse of inner fire that leads to stagnation. Unlike Baphomet, who reveals the path of balance, the Devil represents the condition of enslavement to untransformed instincts. His power is maintained only as long as the chained ones fail to recognize that they hold the key to their own freedom.
