Aster's design has her roots in a really old dragon sketch I made when I was still a teenager. This one, from 2006.

The large eyes, long, flexible neck, and narrow snout stuck with me, and eventually became Aster. :)

So I've been doing a lot of drawings of Sable and Aster recently, but I realize not all of my followers may know where they're from, so I thought I'd go back to some old work and re-introduce them to the world a little. :)

Sable and Aster are the main characters in a tweenage graphic novel project of mine. Back in 2016 I made the first 13 pages and posted them to http://sableandaster.com/

They got their start a bit earlier than that, though; they were the subject of arguably the first proper comic project I ever made, for my first illustration class in college, in 2013. You can see that here: https://rheallart.tumblr.com/post/55128670022/naming-aster-a-sable-aster-story-finished

After finishing that first comic the characters wouldn't leave my head. So now I have an outline somewhere and tens of thousands of words written for their story which may or may not ever happen. XD Ah, the creative process…!

Their story is currently on hiatus due to my on-going chronic health issues making it difficult to create, but that doesn't mean the project's dead; just delayed a while. :da_sweat:

My first attempt at a comic!

Waaaay back when, I used a free Z-Brush-like program (I can NOT remember the name of it, :oof: ) to sculpt this 3D model of Aster's head, so I could more make sense of how to draw it from different angles.

It helped a *bunch* when I went on to draw the first chapter. You can read that at https://sableandaster.com/

The only thing I'd change is I'd scooch her ear back a little farther; it's way too far forward, it's sitting on her cheekbone. x__x Whoops!
