This black-and-white photograph captures a quiet, somewhat mysterious scene: an old stone doorway leading into a narrow, dimly lit stairwell. The texture of the stone surrounding the doorway is rough and weathered, telling a story of age and exposure to the elements. The open door, slightly ajar, invites a glimpse inside but also hints at uncertainty, as the darkness beyond obscures what lies further in.
The stair treads inside the entryway appear worn and uneven, suggesting repeated use over many years. Shadows fall in deep contrast, emphasizing the narrow, confining space and creating a mood that borders on eerie or contemplative. The monochrome palette enhances the sense of timelessness, abstraction, and focus on form and texture rather than color.
Symbolically, doorways often represent transitions or passages between different states or realms—physical or metaphorical—such as moving from the known to the unknown, safety to risk, or one phase of life to another. The partially open door could symbolize invitation, secrecy, or hesitation.
Artistically, the image plays with light and shadow to highlight the architectural detail and the emotional resonance that an ordinary threshold can carry, especially when stripped of color and reduced to light, dark, and texture. The photo connects deeply with themes of mystery, memory, and the stories old structures silently hold.

I have some very fond memories of past trips to Lübeck, so I painted their famous Holsten Gate. It's like the entrance to their old city centre, famous for marzipan and parades.

Since it's germany, the Holsten Gate is usually surrounded by cars. It took the liberty of replacing every car with a tree and I think the city of Lübeck could do the same! :BlobHajMlem:

The walks in Tartu. Supilinn, the old slum area but not anymore, in the beginning of 1900's the river Emajogi was flooding in these houses. The rich people lived on the upper areas.

Verona

The Italian city of love, as it is the city where supposedly the ultimately sad love story of Romeo and Juliet took place. It's a beautiful old town, especially at the iconic and over two millennia old Ponte Pietra (Stone Bridge), looking out over the Adige river. I was lucky with this colourful evening sky. The water level that year was very low, laying bare the rocks that cause the rapids in the river.
