I was cursing myself for not bringing my actual camera with me to the coast today because there happened to be decent bird action, but thankfully, this Brown Pelican let me get close enough to get a couple of decent phone photos before taking off.

A fairly large brown bird with a white belly, standing on a piece of driftwood on a white sand beach. It has webbed feet and an almost comically long beak and a thin, S-shaped neck. The same bird, lifting its wings about to take flight. In this pose, you can really see the tuft of lighter-colored feathers on its head, which resemble a tiny mohawk.

My favorite yard visitor, the northern flicker. Just put up a nest box for him over the weekend, but also moved the feeder so they wouldn't be too close together, and he hasn't found it yet. Hope he forgives us.

A photo of the glorious northern flicker, a sleek taupe-colored woodpecker with a gray face and a long beak, bright red cheek patches, a large black bar across its chest, black barring across its back and wings, black polka dots all over its belly, and red-orange tail feathers outlined and tipped in black. It is a male perched on the top of a wooden trellis facing to the left, and it is mid squawk with its beak wide open.A photo of a large, newly-built wooden nesting box mounted to a black rain-spattered metal pole with an anti-rodent baffle attached to it. Scrub jay Tuesday. Tuesjay, they tell me. Or is it Thursjay? All the days can end in jay I don't know how people keep track or choose this stuff.

A photo of a California scrub jay (Aphelocoma californica), a medium-sized songbird with a vibrant blue head, wings, and tail, gray underside, white throat, black eyes, white eyebrows, black beak, and black legs. It is perched on a tree branch facing to the left.

One of these things is not quite like the others...

Baskett Slough National Wildlife Refuge, Polk County, Oregon. December 29, 2024.

A photograph of a partially submerged wooden pole with green moss growing on it sticking out of a blue pond. Two mallards (a brown female with light spots and a more colorful male with a grey back, brown chest, and dark green head) are sleeping mid-way up the pole, their heads tucked under their wings. Nearer to the water, a Brewers Blackbird (blue-black in color and much smaller than the mallards) sits. In the water in front of the pole, a Northern Shoveler (iridescent green head, brown body, black wings, an intense yellow eye, and a wide dark bill) is scooping something out of the water. The tops of some brown weeds can be seen next to the pole.

Yesterday, I visited the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge for the first time. This little Golden-crowned Kinglet was kind enough to pose for a couple of pictures for me as I made my way along the River Trail.

A small mostly-grey bird with a tiny, sharp beak looking forward. The bird has a black cap with a yellow strip in the middle, making it look like a yellow mohawk. The wings also show some drab yellow stripes, along with some darker grey.A second picture of the same small bird. This time it is in profile, showing how its body is a small oval. It is sitting on a bare twig with a fallen brown leaf behind it.

I love how round and angry-looking these little birds are.

A small, very round, soft-looking grey-brown bird perched on a thorny branch. Behind it is a leaf in the process of turning from green to brown. The leaf is larger than the bird. The bird is looking to the left side of the picture frame. The darker coloring around its eye makes it look a bit like it is furrowing its brow in anger.

A small brown bird with a pointy beak, sitting on a wet-looking, moss-covered branch amongst a field of green ferns and other green foliage. The bird is facing away from the camera, as if to say "I said you can listen to me sing, but did I say you could photograph me?!"

I saw more rough-skinned newts on my hike today than I ever have before. Not that that was too hard to do: Before today, I had seen only one rough-skinned newt.

A brown newt crawling across the cap of a wet-looking reddish-brown mushroom. Under that mushroom are four smaller mushrooms. The rest of the ground is covered in red and yellow fallen leaves.

A medium-sized perching bird on a branch of a tree with green foliage in the background, seen from slightly below. It has its beak open and wings up and out. Its plumage looks smooth and soft. The feathers on its head are a buff color, with fade to a pale yellow almost mid-belly. It has a black "mask" over its eyes, which blends into its black beak. The tips of its tailfeathers are a bright yellow.

I see Northern Flickers quite often, but I never can get decent pictures of one. Today, at St. Louis Fish Ponds County Park, I was finally able to get a clear and somewhat close picture of one.

A brown/grey bird with black speckles all over its body, a black collar, red cheeks, and a rusty colored tail tipped with black sits on a snag that is lightly covered in moss, looking over its shoulder. A green tree and grey sky can be seen in the background.

I spotted this American Goldfinch in my yard. This was the first time I had seen one in my yard! I couldn't tell if she had brought this mixture of fuzz, spiderweb, and feathers to this branch, or if she was contemplating taking it.

#birds #birdsofmastodon #birdwatching #birding #birdsoforegon #oregonwildlife

A muted yellow bird with grey wingtips and a medium beak standing on a slender branch of a tree, partially in the shadows. The bird is looking down at a stringy white mixture of what looks to be spiderweb, general fuzz, and at least one bird feather. The background is out of focus, but it is apparent that it is green leaves with blue sky showing through the openings.
