#Salt stress is a growing problem for global #agriculture. A new study reveals that, in response to salt and #osmotic stress, the dual-action #evolutionarily conserved NatB catalytic subunit NAA20 in Poplar regulates #root #development.

"KEY POINTS
• Surface ice-melt water can migrate downward driven by the osmotic pressure associated with a cryopeg, a lens of salty water below
• Overpressure can cause the frozen soil to crack resulting in mechanical explosion.."

schematics - Warming causes melting in the active layer, which expands deeper into the permafrost. Meltwater then enters the salty cryopeg through osmosis, causing the expansion of the cryopeg, which cracks the overlying permafrost. When those cracks reach the surface, the rapid decrease in pressure in the cryopeg damages the methane hydrates below and triggers a rapid physical explosion. So #actin would be able to start the #lumen opening, and then a switch to #osmotic pressure driven growth would allow further opening before #buckling of actin.
Interesting.

Computational modeling indicates that apical actin polymerization into a stiff network mediates initial lumen expansion and predicts a transition to pressure-driven growth in larger epiblasts to avoid buckling.

"Here we introduce double droplet sensors that enable local measurements of pressure intra- & extra-cellularly within 3D multicellular systems, including living tissues. After generating & calibrating the sensors, we measure the osmotic pressure in of early embryos as well as in the interstitial fluid between the cells of the by monitoring the size of droplets previously inserted in the embryo"
