We get so rattled by some big Scary Thing — communism or crime or drugs or illegal aliens or terrorism — something that scares us so much, we think we can make ourselves safer by giving up some of our freedom. Now, not only does that not hold a drop of water as a logical proposition but it has consistently proved to be an illusion as a practical matter. Empirically, when you make yourself less free, you are not safe, you are just less free.

A young female tourist has been strip searched, jailed in a dirty cell overnight, forced to sign a waiver in exchange for charges to be dropped and forced to pay for damages for an alleged 'scratch to an off duty officers car tail light'

I thought this story was about a Maltese tourist in the US, but depressingly this story is about the Maltese police, and their jaw dropping bastardry towards a young woman on holiday!
