A tree with a sunset view to the sea

There are days when settling down and starting a travel business on a Pacific Island feels slightly tempting as an alternative career.

Like this day, years and years ago.

Not the most challenging hike along the ridge to the top of this tropical island, but the stunning view was worth far more than the afternoon light effort.
Backpacking along a Pacific island like Tavewa, hopping along the Yasawa islands chain in Fiji near Equator got its challenges.

Not big ones. But still.

Then, enjoying part of the vast body of water that is the South Pacific, the different size and types of islands, the colours and the outlook into the far horizon, and the different types of vessels people use to get around.

It makes your mind fly and the inspiration flow.
Still does.

Photo shows an outlook view from an elevated hill towards a set of smaller pacific islands. The nearest is a low crescent shaped one with palm trees and forest and a white beach. Behind the low island is an island with a set of small hills and small natural harbours with some huts and some boats moored. Behind the Pacific is stretching towards the horizon where there might be some island shapes under a light blue afternoon sky, with some clouds building up. In front of the photo there is a single small tree sharing the view. Down the hill for the tree, there is a larger body of water and two thirds of the way to the low beach island there are a collection of sailboats, motorboats and a small cruise ship berthed for the night. The sea is deep indigo blue. The tree has the warm colours of a late afternoon setting sun.

Sunset in Yasawa archipelago. Bula!

Here are two words to learn before visiting Fiji.
The most important word in Fiji is “Bula” – a universal greeting that can mean anything from “hello” to “good morning” to “nice to see you” or “hooray”, and further on to “cheers”, “okay”, and “Hear! Hear!”.
Bula means “Life”, and the most direct translation would be “How’s life?”.

Universal importance
During the first few days in Fiji, one might feel overwhelmed or intimidated as a “Bula” is shouted from strangers in a shop, yelled from someone at a bench by the bus stop, or you are greeted with it from a taxi driver. But one soon learns to return the greeting with a smile, a nod, a thank you or yes. Or sometimes Bula in return, when your jetlagged brain starts remembering that is OK, too.

Bula is used constantly. Even in situations where you may expect less informalities. Like when you are attending a kava-ceremony, and a couple of “Bula” is uttered.

A word of thanks
The second most important Fijian word is “Vinaka” – thank you. Less common use than Bula, but still a good second.

Fijian English is a variant of English and not one of the worst variants. You get by with standard English in Fiji, spoken slowly.
However, not all expressions from classical or modern English are well known among the adults and elders. Most young people on the other hand were well-versed in US American pop culture and internet slang. So, it is rarely a challenge to make oneself understood.

Photo shows a sunset between two palm trees crossing each other at the top, framing the setting sun between the trunks. The main colour is yellow, orange and bronze. At the bottom of the photo the palm trees are planted in earth on the border of a beach. The beach stretches into the sea, with stretches on with only small ripples of disturbance in the surface from the afternoon breeze. In the background another island harbouring the water body with small hills stretching from the near area to the left, forming the horizon where the sun sets. The sky is lightly clouded to the right, but a thicker cloud system is coming from the left warning of a possible rain shower during the night.

Sunset at Nadi Bay, flanked by tall palms and mountains where giants sleep.

The locals around Nadi Bay take great pride in their region of Fiji. They are often boasting about its exceptional weather. Unlike the capital Suva on the east coast, Nadi Bay in the southwest enjoys an abundance of sunshine. Making it a prime spot for visitors and others seeking warm, tropical days in the Pacific.

Adding to its charm, the northern headland of Nadi Bay holds significant historical value. This area was home to Fiji’s first Polynesian settlers, who established communities here approximately 3,500 years ago.

The landscape surrounding the bay is equally remarkable, with a mountain range known as *The Sleeping Giants* rising dramatically from the headland. The formation is striking, with three distinct peaks resembling slumbering "trolls," a comparison to European folklore that locals often make.

One of these "trolls" rests its head near a boulder behind *Smugglers Cove*, a well-known backpacker retreat nestled deep within the bay. A favourite among veteran travellers to these islands. Smugglers Cove is well known for a laid-back atmosphere and welcoming charm. I stayed there and can confirm popular description.

For those eager to explore Fiji’s natural beauty further, *The Garden of the Sleeping Giant* offers a serene escape nearby. This lush nature park is a paradise for plant and wildlife enthusiasts, showcasing the large variety of tropical flora that reflects the island's vibrant biodiversity.

Photo shows a coarse sandy beach changing into a pebble beach before the line of palm trees breaks of the beach to the right. The beach is in a crescent towards the left with a couple of people standing and walking. The palm tree mixed with more ordinary green leafy forest stretches along the beach, and back towards a mountain range. In the forest line down to the left there is a white building, a guest house on the beach. The light is sunset warm and yellowish, and the sky is very lightly clouded light blueish indigo.
