Caution note: "By overlaying recent maps of commodity production areas with maps of historical tree cover loss, this indicator shows where previously forested lands have been replaced by agriculture. Critically, this does not necessarily imply that current-day farms or pastures were directly responsible for past deforestation events. Furthermore, this approach does not allow monitoring of the potential indirect effects of these commodities on deforestation—for example, where expansion of a commodity displaces other forms of farming that contribute to deforestation elsewhere."

Global wildfires burned an area of land larger than India in 2024

This is almost 10% below the average annual area burned over the past two decades.
But, due to an increase in wildfires in carbon-rich forests, the #CO2 #emissions resulting from these fires were almost 10% above average.
The report also zooms in on four of the most prominent extreme #wildfire events during this time: southern #California; north-east #Amazonia; South #America’s #Pantanal-#Chiquitano region; and the #Congo Basin.
All of these events were found to have been more likely to occur as a result of human-caused #ClimateChange.

‘Rastro dos Bichos’ estreia na TV Cultura

Neste domingo, 21 de setembro, estreia na TV Cultura a série documental Rastro dos Bichos, em cinco episódios semanais. A produção aborda a relação entre animais em extinção e os seres humanos nas comunidades ecológicas que compartilham. Vai ao ar às 16h30.

Com direção de Sérgio Lobato, que há 25 anos desenvolve projetos audiovisuais com temática socioambiental e direitos humanos, a série destaca as principais espécies ameaçadas da fauna brasileira nos diversos biomas nacionais.

As araras-azuis-de-lear, os sertanejos e o povo indígena Pankararé da Caatinga baiana são temas do primeiro programa. Intensamente traficadas para a Europa, essas araras foram tidas como extintas no seu habitat, e só foram reencontradas em 1978 por sertanejos que guiaram o ornitólogo Helmut Sick a uma população de apenas 21 indivíduos. Nesse contexto, o fotógrafo Adriano Gambarini segue os rastros da arara, conversando com os filhos dos sertanejos que fizeram o contato com a ave há 45 anos e até hoje trabalham na sua preservação. Os caminhos também levam aos Pankararé e seus encantados, que podem ver a caatinga de cima: deles dependem a vida dos humanos e dos bichos.

Nos demais episódios, Gambarini vai ao Rio de Janeiro compreender a participação de diferentes agentes sociais e locais que potencializam a preservação dos micos-leões-dourados e de botos-cinzas; viaja ao Pantanal em busca das onças-pintadas que vivem junto a comunidades regionais e ao povo Guarani-Kaiowá; e, por fim, sai à procura de um lobo-guará que se camufla no capim amarelo do Cerrado mineiro, em uma experiência que envolve mistérios, preconceitos e simbolismos.
