"Building a Home in Between"
Brick #1: Books
For the past decade I have been moving around so many places, living a few months here, a couple years there... never really settling. So my home might look very different from other people's home. It's made of the objects I carry with me in my backpack and suitcases and of memories I make and people I meet.
In this project I represented those objects in the shape of bricks, like I use them to build this home even when in between places.

Books are part of the objects I carry around in various shapes (paperback or electronic). Or else I find my way to books always registering to local libraries.

A mini rectangle book shelf opened front and back. It has 3 mini books standing vertical and one flat opened. In each mini book there are burn pages of paper. The book shelf is made of terracotta clay and the book covers are terracotta paperclay fired at 1220 degrees celsius. The paper pages have been added afterwards and then the piece has been fired again at a 1000 degrees celsius.

Ultramarine, spindle-shaped figure, reduced to a tiny head and a bulbous torso. Painted with golden spirals and lightning symbols.

I haven't yet attempted making papier-mâché furniture but do know of some artisans who have done this (i.e., small side tables, chairs, etc.). It's fairly challenging & also takes a good deal of strategic planning because structural integrity is an issue. Items are typically reinforced with other materials like corrugated cardboard, wire, etc. Think I'll stick with the smaller items for now.🤣

The idea is to make beautiful-but-practical items for the home. So, in other words, these papier-mâché projects hopefully aren't anything like the ones many of us remember making in elementary school.😂 Yeah, so nothing like those papier-mâché balloons that never dried, papier-mâché + coat-hanger wire Pterodactyl mobiles, or "I-think-it's-a-cat-no-wait-it's-supposed-to-be-a-monkey" childhood art installations.🤣

Also useful is a dedicated blender for easier pulp processing + a sieve, pitcher, & rectangular tub for making paper sheets. (If you can repurpose an old blender or DIY a mould & deckle using old picture frames, all the better.) For drying, clotheslines/drying racks/clothespins/tables can be useful. In addition to papermaking & bookbinding, I upcycle paper scraps into paper clay figurines + other papier-mâché creations.
