Can confirm that harvested in September look terrible but taste great at the end of December. Clearly, however, not ready for commercial prime time yet. (Hint: Keep 'em cold — in the refrigerator — and check them every week or so to make sure they don't develop mold.)

" are North America’s largest native fruit — and are exceedingly rare, found mainly in the wild across 26 states or in small orchards in Appalachia, where the trees have historically thrived. Praised for their flavor, which is sometimes described as a cross between a mango and banana, the custard-like fruit is an ideal spoonable dessert.

And they could be small farms’ hedge against in a fast-warming world."

@redcrew also, raw pawpaws are messy to eat, they contain large seeds and bitter skin—nonetheless they are delightful!

@ytetic aah, quite probably. From what I understand, many nurseries don't bother because even though they're quite hardy, much more than a year and the taproot gets to be 4-5' which is impossible to keep in a pot or dig up from growing them in the ground. I've gotten new saplings and had no success even from reputable nurseries. Partly because the damn deer mowed them down literally in the time it took me to go from where they were planted to the garage to make the chickenwire cages. The one that survived grew a couple of leaves but didn't survive the next winter. So, I figure it's time to try cold stratifying seeds and being more proactive about protecting them. My yard seems ideal for them - they are great understory trees and I have big trees on my property.

fwiw, I want them mostly for the foliage, and the fruit would just be a bonus...

Three good things on a Thursday:

1) Bought a bushel of sweet corn to can from a farm stand. Found two big pieces of huitlacoche on one of the ears. Score! Immediately put them in the freezer;
2) Snagged two pawpaw seedlings from a guy selling them. Another score;
3) Salad for lunch using greens from our garden and our last flower blossoms. Stretching a point, but I think it qualifies as foraging. 😆

I got #pawpaws at the Farmer's Market! I have never had them before and they're... different.

The ripe ones are super soft, I can see why they don't transport well. The fruit tastes sweet, fruity, it tastes of all the fruits. Texture is peach-like but a bit floury near the skin. Seeds are finger-joint size, black and flattish.

The pawpaw is a #Missouri state fruit tree.

#Missouri people, do you have a source for #pawpaws? I would love to try them, have never tasted them and very curious.

Pawpaws (Asimina triloba)
Hadn’t been up here in a while and was worried I missed them.
Grabbed a handful off the ground, but they’re still pretty hard.
Largest fruit native to the US, and really tasty!

Did I post my free pawpaw identification guide here yet??

Well here it is in case I didn't:

Web archive link where you can read this guide for free without downloading, and download it, and it comes with an automatic audiobook version!

Media fire links where you can download for free:

Print version: mediafire.com/file/oznqy69metd

With image descriptions for digital use: mediafire.com/file/xg5td2qpz0w

Buy a physical copy (as a big flat hardcover book. I'll have to see how to make it smaller so it's easy to bring to the woods lol. Half the profits I get I will donate to the Web Archive for hosting the files for free and all the other awesome stuff they do)

Pawpaw trees have been pruned. Couldn't resist the warm weather, & no rain is in the forecast for a few days.

Last year we harvested 296 pawpaws from 4 trees, mostly from just 2 of the trees. 83.25 pounds. This year we should top 100 pounds easy.

So...who wants some?
