I also grew these around the house because I've been thinking about death and I want to leave a permanent legacy in my neighborhood.

🌿 Blueberry Basics: Grow & Harvest 🫐
Want a better blueberry harvest?
✨ Plant at least two bushes with similar bloom times for best cross-pollination.
☀️ Full sun + acidic, well-draining soil (pH 4.5–5.5) = happy berries!
🌱 Space: 2.5 ft apart for hedges, 6–8 ft for individual plants.
🌾 Mulch to lock in moisture & block weeds.
🧪 Test your soil first.
🍂 Plant in spring or fall—skip the fertilizer at first, compost a month later!

By the 1940s–60s, blueberry farming exploded across the U.S., planting over 200,000 seedlings in 13 states. Elizabeth White was honored for her work in 1932—forever changing American agriculture.

🐼 The climate conscious bandit eats leaves and shoots! 🔫🍃🌳

some reasons for eating tree leaves (and using trees for staple crops too):
🌳 yummy! 😋
🌳 can forage wild for free 🕊️
🌳 connect to nature 💚
🌳 very nutritious - leaves of woody plants are on average much higher in key nutrients than annual vegetables 🥗
🌳 woody plants, especially trees, sequester carbon! ⤵️
🌳 they improve soil health and reduce erosion 🪱
🌳 climate resilience 🌍
🌳 trees are more resilient to fluctuating weather and climate conditions than annual crops 🌥️
🌳 they're better at soaking up and storing rain - important with increasingly unpredictable rainfalls 💦
🌳 increase water quality 💧
🌳 habitat 🐦
🌳 pollination 🐝 🦋
🌳 less susceptible to diseases and pests, especially in diverse systems (not monocrops) 🐞
🌳 reduced need for pesticides ☠️
🌳 they provide shade ☂️
🌳 less labour intensive 🏖️
🌳 great diversity, increases biodiversity and diversity of foods 🌈
🌳 they promote longterm thinking and concern for the ecosystem 🧓🤝👶
🌳 can be important culturally, especially to indigenous peoples 🧑‍🌾
🌳 there are species suitable to all climates and conditions where food is grown 🏜️ ❄️ ⛰️ 🌲

🧵 for some temperate examples off the top of my head

For centuries, Indigenous peoples and early settlers have used blackberries not just for food, but for healing — from soothing sore throats to easing digestive woes. The extra Vitamin C will help stave off scurvy, maties. 🍃

They're easy to grow too! Full sun, decent soil, and you’re set. Whether you’re making cobbler, jam, or grabbing a handful fresh off the bush (before the birds do 🐦), blackberries are a timeless treasure.

PERENNIAL tap the Blood Brothers and Death Cab members for new EP

New England mod-punk trio Perennial return with Perennial ’65, a bold new EP that finds them diving even deeper into the mid-60s garage-pop that they first explored on their bold 2024 LP, Art History.

Inspired by the between-album EPs of sixties bands like The Beatles (whose Beatles ’65 compilation inspired the title) and The Who’s Ready Steady Who,Perennial’s even more playful and dynamic on Perennial ’65, fusing British Invasion hooks with their signature art-punk chaos.

“Perennial ’65,” the title track out today, is a sharp and direct blast of organ, tambourine, and fuzzed-out bass––“Perennial trying to write the 15th track for Rubber Soul,” the band puts it. “We wanted something with a bit more of that Maximum R&B groove.” It’s also the first track to feature new drummer Ceej Dioguardi (they/them), who joined last spring.

Elsewhere on the EP, a feral cover of The Kinks’ “All Day And All Of The Night” highlights their love of 60s garage punk, and “C Is For Cubism” veers into more ambient, electronic territory. Along the way, the band also gets a little help from their friends in the form of two remixes of hits from Art History, with Chris Walla (Death Cab For Cutie) and Cody Votolato (The Blood Brothers) both offering their studio-as-instrument action paintings of Perennial classics.
