Periodontal diseases show a marked increase in prevalence with age, as highlighted by data from Jönköping, Sweden (1983). The progression is irreversible: early diagnosis intervention are essential to protect oral health.

From: Hugoson et al., 1992. doi.org/10.1111/j.1600-051X.19
Dark blue: healthy, orange: gingivitis, grey: periodontitis with mean bone loss <1/3 height, yellow: 1/3-2/3, light blue: >2/3.

Periodontal diseases show high global prevalence, affecting ~90% of young adults (35–44yo): half with gingivitis, half with periodontitis, with no regional specificity.

WHO regions (Africa, Americas, Eastern Mediterranean, Europe, South-East Asia, Pacific). CPI0 = healthy; 1 = bleeding; 2 = calculus; 3 = shallow pockets; 4 = deep pockets
