Forget-me-nots made with tiny glass rocailles on green wire in front of an old dictionnary page. The glass beads for a flower: 5 blue lustered ones and one small yellow one in the middle.

Even smaller flowers with a transparent blue. I need tweezers to make them. A ruler beside shows that one flower is smaller than 5 mm.

An animal vertebra looks like a smiling face from above. For emphasis, it has red glass beads as eyes and a red Asian lucky charm bead with lettering as a tongue. The monster is surrounded at the top and bottom by forget-me-nots in perlage technique - all together in a rectangular box trimmed with beige-golden sequins. Everything beams in brightness and good vibes.

🧵 2/ More #perlage #flowers. These are made by me in another technique which allows to work on different and smaller forms. I reconstructed the technique thanks to many photos of historical findings. Why is the #craft disappearing? It is extremely labour-intensive, the material (usually from manufacturers) is very expensive and you need a lot of it. People no longer want to pay a reasonable price for such art.

Red poppy flower amid wild carrot flowers (white with bright green leaves) - made in perlage technique with tiny glass rocailles on finest wire.

Fantasy perlage flower in blue and rose with long yellow stamen. The flower is worked on the finest silver wire. In terms of colour, it is characterised by varying degrees of transparency: many beads are opaque, some are made of frosted glass and some, such as the pollen, are transparent for greater brilliance.

Wild carrot flowers in Perlage technique: macro. The macro shows the work of placing transparent and bright green rocailles on dark green, very fine wire.

The same perlage technique was used for this lavender flower. The vibrancy comes from the meticulously tiny windings and special beads in different shades of lavender. The lavender colours have a kind of rippled shimmer. Even smaller glass beads are transparent with a purple inner coating.

🧵1/ It's only dark and grey here. Time for some #bloomscrolling and a #coloursplash. In France, such #flowers were made in the 19th century (until plastic times) for grave wreaths and religious art, the #klosterarbeiten. We had two different #perlage techniques depending on the region. These are reconstructions. People knowing the techniques become rare.

From our museum: Ancient bead embroidery with canetille, sequins, facetted rhinestones and more. It is a floral embroidery in silver and gold with white Flowers on black fabric. Some cobalt-blue rhinestone elements remind peacock feathers.

View from above into a richly decorated round box in shades of orange, green, gold and yellow. On a padded brocade fabric, the butterfly is pinned next to a decorative element. The inside edges are lined with braids. Around the edge is a handmade ribbon of perlage with floral elements in orange and green, made from the tiniest of limited edition rocailles and finest brass wire.

Close-up view of the inner. The butterfly has green forewings and grey hindwings. Its body is made of black leather and green silk. Its right wings are covered by a transparent gossamer hand-made with raw silk and some yellow and green silk threads. The decorative element is made of green plastic fused with cement. A flower is glued in between. It was crocheted from golden DCM yarn, its pistil consists of 5 green picasso beads.

The inner rim of the box in close-up shows how the perlage line is constructed and sewn down over the braid. There are three beads in each element: one green bead over two orange ones.

The outside of the box is covered with orange-brown sari silk. Above the rim of the box, the perlage elements stand up in the air.

My work today on the #BiodiversityShrines was mainly the old technique of #perlage = #beading. On social media it's often called #FrenchBeading, but in France, we don't say that. Differences in beading technique are less national than temporal. Victorian techniques, f. e., differed from those of the Renaissance. Perlage was traditionally used for costumes, headdresses or so-called #klosterarbeiten like #reliquaries. Floral elements of 3 rocailles (in lustred orange and Picasso turquoise) on the finest brass wire are mounted in line at the top of the edges of a round box. The bottom of the box is padded brocade. A reddish-brown braid is lined inside the rim. when everything is stabilised, I have to arrange these elements carefully.

Macro of the paper art butterfly: Jordanita subsolana. The left side with blueish-green and grey wings is photo-realistic, the body is made from black leather and green silk. The right wings are covered with a cobweb-like transparent gossamer. It's handmade with raw silk and inlays of yellow and green silk threads.

A valuable-looking structure. It is green plastic waste melted and fused with a piece of cement. A kind of flower is mounted in a corner between the two materials. It consists of crocheted golden DCM thread and a stamp made of five drop-shaped glass beads.

The lower part: A butterfly sits on a randomly curved thick wire. It has tiny leaves made with glass rocailles. The background is a floral vintage tapestry, framed with braids.

The lid and the lower part of the tin box are furnished inside like a modern reliquary.

The inside of the lid is lined with the original golden cigarette paper. A bouquet of embroidered flowers is fashion waste from saree production. It is colourful and machine-stitched.
