(2/2) The other two #Illustrations of this chapter. One of them is the finished illustration of Clarkia entering the cafeteria (which I also spent a lot of time modeling the details on the windows), and the other illustration introduces Pearl (iPhone 6/6s) after she de-escalated an argument between Kiah and Clarkia, which Marcia, Fiore and Antares witnessed. That illustration also shows Fiore in her aviator jacket.

From Fiore’s appearance in this chapter, I now think of her as someone who is often terrified of social interactions and dislikes public speaking, but has a fearless side when flying planes, hang-gliding or being aboard a space station.

Pearl is a fashion designer and interior decorator. She became influential since the 6s popularized rose gold as a color option, which according to some articles, may have also influenced the popularity of “Millennial Pink” as an interior decor color.

Some of the articles on the project wiki have been updated yesterday with information from this chapter, and I'm in the process of updating the rest of them.

An illustration of Clarkia entering the cafeteria. The cafeteria entrance has a pair of gray doors, and on both sides are rounded windows. The opening of the door shows a glimpse of the hallway, and a wall that has several windows facing the courtyard side (though only the door to the courtyard is visible). Clarkia has long wavy hair with a white to sky blue gradient, has gold eyes, is wearing a purple minidress with orange trim and a white scarf and dark blue leggings. Over her dress, she wears a sky blue and white jacket. An illustration of Pearl cheerfully posing with her arms folded. The background is abstract with a light pink to purple gradient with light yellow bubbles and faded white polka dots. To the right of her are chibis of Marcia, Fiore and Antares, who are cheering for her. The caption reads “I’m glad we could quickly talk this out!” And below it, it reads “Thank you!”, however the context is that the other three are thanking Pearl for de-escalating an argument they witnessed between two other characters.

(1/2) “Same Place, Different Universe” Chapter 5

📄 synergyeclipse30.neocities.org

Title: I Guessed Correctly That She Got It From Another Universe

This is another silly chapter though it leads into the next plot point and more clues about Chariots of Colors’ counterpart. Marcia meets up with Antares to play the tape that Marcia found since Antares is the only CC member known to have a tape recorder.

One that might be used to control machinery more often, but it can still record or play tapes.

The background for this illustration is one I’m proud of but also frustrated by; the render turned out rougher than usual and I had to manually draw in several lines and it’s obvious where I needed to when I was making the final edits. One of them was that I forgot to add the decorations at the bottom of the cafeteria windows on the hallway side which I realized after I rendered that hallway. It took a few tries to successfully render 🫠

I spent a lot of time finding the materials that I thought would’ve been the best fit for parts of Chariots of Colors’ headquarters, but when I saw that multicolor tile material that I chose for an accent wall, I immediately thought to include it somewhere in their HQ!

An illustration of Marcia and Antares walking through a hall. Along the left side of the wall are several vertical windows, and a door which leads out to a courtyard. Along the right side is a door to the cafeteria, with 3 windows on each side. The cafeteria windows have a red and green Art Deco-style stained glass decoration along the top. Further in the back along that wall is a colorful mural. Furthest in the background is a staircase, and a patterned accent wall. The accent wall has tiles in several colors while the other walls are white and the floor has gray panelling with glowing blue lines that run in parallel to the panels.

Marcia is still wearing her Assassin’s Creed II-inspired longcoat over a pink minidress with dark gray leggings. Antares is wearing a Bauhaus-style minidress with sunglasses and a biker jacket.

(1/2) “Same Place, Different Universe” #Webnovel Chapter 5 #WIP 2

A preview of Clarkia (macOS 10.12 Sierra and 10.13 High Sierra), though she tends to go by her middle name of Sierra. Her first name is named after the clarkia xantiana, one of the flowers native to the Sierra Nevada area.

She was previously mentioned in Kiah’s article as her rival. I wasn’t sure then if I’d get to introducing her in this chapter, but I found a way! She contrasts with Kiah by being more talented as a combatant and has a tough but prim personality, but she dislikes being accused of coasting by on her talents so she also takes the rivalry with Kiah seriously.

However, she isn’t always as serious as she tries to appear. Her design combines the color schemes of Sierra’s and High Sierra’s default wallpapers since it felt too limiting to just use the color scheme of the High Sierra wallpaper.

She has a metal clarkia flower hairpin with an orange ribbon on the right side of her head, and an earpiece on the left side of her head. She wears dark blue leggings with gray and white boots. The drawing is partially shaded.

Operating Superstars — A new character article for the #Wiki, re-introduction and another piece of #Worldbuilding

I published them a few days ago; an article about “ghost data”, which was first mentioned in chapter 13 of “I Was a Software Developer…”.

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

The existence of ghost data might be analogous to assets in software that are cut from the final version of it, but are still in the code.

It might also be based off of what was missed, so I considered that the characters that represent non-existent or skipped OS releases could be beings of ghost data.

The first version of the article for Ximena also has info from this chapter plus a bit more about her role as an OS. Her overworld “sprite” shows her design as an OS which is similar to her Version 2 design.

There’s a lot I’ll still need to finalize as I think over more details as shown by the sheer number of things listed in the "Details Not Finalized" template. I’m confident in the concept of her being a crafter of custom gear, a shop owner that joined The Awks when she became an OS but also founded her own team.

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Her decision to form her own team could reflect disagreements that she had with The Awks, yet she might’ve tried to keep a dual membership since Xenix was the most widely sold UNIX version in the 1980’s. There would’ve been challenges with this...

The work she did when she was active in her original teams was vaguely defined in Version 2. I wish I was more clear then, but in Version 3 it’s now more clearly defined and better reflects what I intended for her character.

She is wearing a dark green T-shirt with light yellow stripes under a black studded vest, and is wearing trousers with a purple to orange gradient on them. She is wearing a black studded belt, orange sneakers, and is wearing elbow-length black fingerless gloves. Her gloves have green X-shaped straps on them, and she is wearing metal hoop earrings. On her forehead she wears a black headband with a metal floppy disk charm in the middle, framed by her long peaked bangs.

The other #Illustrations for this chapter: Olympia showing off a clipboard of notes. I also updated the type of outfits she wears since her first illustration; her outfits have peony motifs on them.

Damien’s reaction to when Ximena asked if he and Piroska already knew each other since Ximena hadn’t met him before. The feeling of answering on the spot, and this also shows another of his casual outfits.

When he half-jokingly suggested that a ghost could be in the shop (as if there was anyone else there Ximena could’ve been asking then), she took it seriously because “ghost data” can exist.

I updated several articles on the wiki with information from this chapter.

“I Was a Software Developer…” #Webnovel Chapter 13

📄 synergyeclipse30.neocities.org

Title: Halloween is About Make-believe, So That's What I'm Going to Do!

Damien realizes that it is Halloween in the Human World and that his former workplace would be hosting a party. He mentions this to his colleagues in the Programmable Darling Patrol and they want to know more about this Human World holiday from him! Piroska also wants to go to the event after being gone from the Human World for close to a decade. This chapter introduces a few more #Worldbuilding details:

*As of the timeframe this story takes place, Techlandia’s knowledge about subjects from the Human World is still considerably limited that compendiums are written from gathered information, and added to when there’s new information.
*The existence of “ghost data”.

Olympia gets a role here writing down the notes to add to one of the compendium volumes. She’s a PrDP member that I overlooked so far, but I still have plans for her to have a larger role in a later chapter.

This chapter also introduces Ximena into the Version 3 continuity through showing the crafting shop she ran before she became an OS (and before her makeover!).

She may have still ran it in another location for some time afterwards, though for how long isn’t finalized. Her design as an OS will be similar to her design from Version 2, but her characterization has some differences; her being a tailor and crafter of custom gear is one of them, and that gives me another detail to build off of for her.

Her introduction in this story may pave the way for more details about DISKTEAM, the team that she founded that is the predecessor of Defending Waits for Nobody.

“I Was a Software Developer…” #Webnovel Chapter 13 #WIP 3

A cleaned up #Sketch of Olympia that’ll be made into one of the illustrations, doing one of the things she does best; taking notes and making them into educational material.

Out of the Programmable Darling Patrol members, she hasn’t had as much focus as most of them so far, and her only illustration in the story was from chapter 7 when she was introduced.

She might be reclusive to people outside of her team and whoever else she works with since she’s based on a PDP model that had one of the shortest production runs (from 1969-1972). This would also contrast her with the highly extroverted members of her team (I.e: Piper, Piroska). To the people who get to know her well, she’s very friendly and a helpful teacher.

The draft of this chapter is almost finished, and I started vectoring each of the sketches for it.

Operating Superstars — A new character article and details for another

A few days ago I published the first version of another character article on the project #Wiki. Kiah’s counterpart appeared before her, but she appears at last in chapter 4 of “Same Place, Different Universe”:

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

The trivia section in her article mentions her rivalry with the character representing Sierra and High Sierra. Based on how Yosemite was reported to have a lot of problems with usability, but El Capitan is much more polished, I see Kiah as an OS that started out as an underdog as a combatant against malware and one that some of her team’s supporters saw as a liability, but she trained very hard to gain her reputation for reliability.

Since Sierra didn’t have as troubled reputation on launch, the Sierra/High Sierra character would be more talented but Kiah may have accused her of coasting by on her talents.

This is inspired by the “Underdog protagonist vs. a more talented rival” dynamic, and would be relevant in the timeframe “Same Place, Different Universe” takes place. If I don’t show this in SPDU, I still want to write or draw something showing this 🤔

I also updated the rest of the character articles with the “cycle” or year they debuted in the Techlandian calendar for the Debut field of the infobox, and moved the real world release date to the Release Date field under the technical section.

Operating Superstars — Two new articles of former rivals

I published these articles a few days ago so this is overdue, but there are two new articles for the project #Wiki; these characters’ first actual introduction in this continuity were through “To the Visitors…”, but appeared elsewhere before it was publicly announced.

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o
📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Pleiades’ (Macintosh System 7) and Kyouko’s (Windows 95+98) articles delve a bit into the timeframe that corresponds to the 1990’s when the rivalries between their teams got hostile; Defending Waits for Nobody became the most successful team, and Chariots of Colors was at risk of disbanding. After the hostilities cleared, OSes from these teams could easily work together and be friendly again, which “To the Visitors…” showed.

I tried to write these rivalries between their teams as being nuanced and these characters having their own motives that drove them. Before the hostilities emerged, OSes of CC and DWN had rivalries that weren’t as serious as they might’ve appeared to be, and could also be friends so the emerging of hostilities would be sad for both teams; friends or at least cordial rivals turned against each other.

I portray CC and DWN with rivalries that were usually less serious than some other rivalries, since Microsoft's rivalries with IBM and Novell were mutual grudges; even in the 90’s, Microsoft still developed Office for the Mac and there was a line of DOS-compatible Macs.

The pressure on both sides to succeed could’ve driven the hostilities to emerge, and so could have CC’s desperation to turn around their fortunes after several efforts failed (and many people started to doubt if they’d be able to stay in operation).

This is still a tricky timeframe to write about and I intentionally kept details vague, but Pleiades’ and Kyouko’s ordeals shape their present characterizations.

The art movement that Kyouko popularized is a reference to Vaporwave having a lot of Windows 9x imagery, but sometimes Vaporwave aesthetics have featured early Mac imagery too… 🤔

“Same Place, Different Universe” chapter 4 #WIP 1

When I write stories for the Operating Superstars project, when right now I have two ongoing stories, I prefer to alternate work on each chapter. Chapter 4 of SPDU will introduce another character into the Version 3 continuity; this #Sketch for one of the illustrations is of Kiah (OS X 10.10 Yosemite and 10.11 El Capitán) when she checks on Marcia immediately after the end of chapter 3.

She has a boisterous attitude but tries to be helpful and always wants to be active with something. At the time this story takes place, she is the one of the newest members of Chariots of Colors but has proven to be successful after a rough start (Yosemite had significant issues at launch, El Capitán was a refinement that fixed them) She might seem intimidating to some because OS X 10.11’s namesake being a rock formation that is very difficult to climb. Two of her hobbies are mountain climbing and hiking.

I added this update to the home page, and launched the Archives page for the first updates to be moved from it:

Operating Superstars - 2 more character articles and a #Worldbuilding update

Lately I’ve been drafting chapters 12 and 13 of “I Was a Software Developer…” and started an illustration, but moved towards finishing my drafts for Piroska’s and Valencia’s articles for the project #Wiki. Both of them will need to be updated again after each of the next chapters are published.

Piroska:
📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Valencia:
📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Piroska was Valencia’s mentor in the Programmable Darling Patrol and like many of the former PrDP members, her modern design is based on Space Age fashion. The 1970's PDP-11 models looked the coolest IMO so her design is based on them the most.

Valencia’s isn’t and instead is based on nautical fashion, but she still has some of the other fashion elements associated with her former team. They were two of the most influential members of this team, and in modern times they still have roles in hobbyist movements but Valencia also does a lot of mission-critical work since OpenVMS is still widely used for it.

Writing Valencia’s article led me to consider whether there might be a skillset in the setting based on high-availability computing and safety-critical systems so the article was updated with what I considered:

Hello #Fediverse, here’s today’s daily OS-tan!

This is Windows 3.1-tan, also known as Ōbaba-sama (大婆様), a personification of Windows 3.1! She’s a quiet and graceful character often depicted in a long, frilly violet gown with a 3.1 brooch on her collar.

Ōbaba has a unique connection to DOS Kitty, her inseparable companion who represents DOS. This relationship reflects Windows 3.x’s reliance on DOS. In some depictions, DOS Kitty is portrayed as a black cat, while in others, she’s a small catgirl nurse.

In the OS-tan family, Ōbaba is considered the younger sister of Oichi (Windows 1.0-tan) and the older sister of NT-Mama. She’s also often seen as Windows 95-tan's mother.

Originally, Ōbaba did not exist as a character and Windows 3.1 was portrayed as a box similar to what Windows 98 and 98SE-tan have but more recent depictions prefer the human design by EG33. Her manner of speaking is often ending sentences with "ja". Despite being retired, she’s depicted tending a family shrine or occasionally donning military uniforms, suggesting a proactive role in the "OS Wars."

Ōbaba’s design debuted in 2004.

Operating Superstars - 2 more character articles

Two more character bios have been published for the project #Wiki; Wénjié’s as one of the characters to first appear in "To the Visitors…" and Regina as one of them to first appear in chapter 3 of "Same Place, Different Universe."

📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o
📄 operatingsuperstars.miraheze.o

Wénjié’s article mentions some former rivalries that she had. I still don’t have a lot of specific details set about how the conflicts of the 90’s took form (and whether they involved combat), but something I can establish is that some of them could be reconciled.

She’s friends with her former rivals from Chariots of Colors and may have reconciled with them quickly since she had other rivalries that were much more serious and personal (i.e: Windowx 3.x competing against OS/2 and DR-DOS). One of them was never resolved.

Regina’s article was difficult to write since she’s the first character I wrote an article for that debuted after the setting’s default "present time" of 2010.

I considered whether to write her role and characterization in the future tense as a character who debuted in "the future", but I decided to write them in the present tense to keep her article consistent with the other character articles.

When I put this together, I didn’t have an index page ready so there’s no link to it. I still don’t, but should work on that. However, just in case anyone removed the “story_chapters” part of the URL to go to the index, I published a #ShortStory that was meant to be an Easter egg along with the story chapters page!

I included the illustrations from the story here.

This story references a few easter eggs including one in Windows 3.1 of a bear in a suit, and the System 7 “Blue Meanies” messages.

This formerly unlisted story is now added to the project #Wiki and is the actual first story appearance for a few characters.
