Here in West Yorkshire we’ve had hot dry weather for what seems like forever, but it is finally raining. I’ve just been standing in my kitchen doorway watching the rain fall in the glow of a streetlight. It smells beautiful. That smell (petrichor) is caused by geosmin, a chemical produced by bacteria. We are so sensitive to it that we can smell it in concentrations as low as 4 parts per billion. #rain #petrichor #geosmin

I know the English word for " earthy smell after rain" is #petrichor, from Ancient Greek.
But what about the "vibrant colours, soft lighting, extra-loud birdsong"?
Maybe another language has one for this phenomenon? (Looking at you, German!)

Fun #smell fact: #petrichor, the distinctive odour that occurs when it rains after periods of dry weather, is caused by a chemical (geosmin) emitted by bacteria in the soil. For reasons that are unclear, humans are extraordinarily sensitive to geosmin, being able to detect concentrations as low as four parts per billion. Perhaps somewhere in our evolutionary history this ability helped our ancestors detect and seek out water, much as camels do today. #olfaction
