PGE sent an email in which they laud solar power, and have links to the state savings calculator, and to get started with a contractor.

Even a link to get more savings from an existing home or business solar energy system.

This is PGE, the Oregon monopoly from which we get our power, not PG&E, the California monopoly, which is disaster-causing challenged.

I am pleased with this continued alignment with the force, but cannot seem to shake the feeling that there is something in it for the dark side.

I mean, how can I complain about how unreliable PG&E as they continue to charge me so much money for power if my instance isn’t up and running?

I wish I had a choice for where I get power.

When I brought up this new Madison instance I thought about hosting it in my homelab.

But, I remembered how unreliable PG&E is…

"CleanPowerSF rates will not increase on July 1". You'll never get an email like that from Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E). PG&E has raised rates 6 times in the last 12 months, 56% in 3 years, and 110% in 10 years.

The city of San Francisco has been federally mandated to provide electricity to its residents since 1913. PG&E has been blocking this for over a century. After a 2002 California law required private utilities to let their customers buy power from community choice aggregators, the city created CleanPowerSF, which provides a partial alternative to PG&E.

Over the last month, I paid CleanPowerSF 16¢/kWh* for energy, and PG&E 30¢/kWh to delivery that energy. 46¢ total. The average price for electrical service in the US is 13¢. The average price in California is 26¢. Last year the city started the next step in evicting PG&E. Let's keep the momentum going. Tell your representatives you are paying attention and want PG&E gone.

*: this is for 100% green energy, but still less than PG&E charges for brown energy.

"The Vistra fire in Moss Landing caught everyone by surprise. What we can learn from it?” —David Schmalz, #MontereyCountyWeekly cover story

"On Feb. 13, 2022, a similar incident occurred at Vistra’s Moss 100 facility, and this time, both #Vistra facilities were taken offline.

"Meanwhile, PG&E’s 182.5-megawatt Elkhorn facility came online in April 2022. Unlike both Vistra facilities, the Elkhorn’s batteries were not in buildings – they were in an array of 256 Tesla Megapacks on 33 concrete slabs.

In the early morning of Sept. 20 of that year, just over five months later, a fire broke out in one of #Tesla Megapacks at the facility, prompting the closure of Highway 1 and a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents. Though the fire only burned for six hours, the orders remained in effect until just before 7pm due to the risk of toxic smoke inhalation.”

I got an email from PGE. In addition to the time-of-day plan, I'm on the green energy (-ish) plan, too.

"In 2024, you supported 13,109 kWh of renawable energy

That’s equivalent to…

170,247 hours of streaming content

10,924 pots of brewed coffee"

Okay, but about 1800 of those pots of coffee, and more hours of streaming content than I'd care to admit, were consumed by... checks notes... me.

Report back from Rose City Counter Info:

In the Fall of 2024, several dozen trees in the Harborton Reliability Project area were spiked. Metallic and ceramic spikes were used, and between one to three spikes were placed in each selected tree.

We waited before sending this message in order to give time for legal advocacy groups to do their work, and also to let any traces of our presence decay into the loam.

Now, the project continues despite the efforts of the community, and the area threatened to be destroyed has grown.

It is now our time to get to work to defend forest park.
We will not let them take the earth from us.

Sincerely,
P.G.E. (Portlanders Getting Even)

Gosh how thoughtful of to send me a postcard — they’re “updating” my rates this summer. For a minute I thought these fuckers were going to raise my already astronomical electric bill.

Oh, wait….

A postcard from PG&E telling me they’re helpfully “updating” my rate” this summer.

#Insurance is a type of gambling based on percentages of risk that can be pretty accurately assessed but when #InuranceCompanies have to pay out more than they expect & actually suffer losses, they plead poverty & file to increase their rates which state #InsuranceCommissioners usually just rubberstamp, much like the #CA #PublicUtilitiesCommission does for #PGE.

All of my insurance rates (as well as my PGE bills) have gone up substantially in the past 10 years & that's while I've never filed a insurance claim (other than for a couple of broken windshields) on any of my 5 car insurance polices or on my homeowners polices.

I've got enough $ on hand to self-insure my cars & house & I'm seriously thinking about doing that my paying off my home mortgage and, for my cars, cancelling collision coverage & only carrying enough liability coverage as permitted by the law. My back up on liability is a $2M liability umbrella that I also have.

Going to look into how much $ in premiums this is going to save me shortly.

The city has approved PGE’s Harborton Reliability Project, which aims to clearcut 20 acres of
Forest Park in Portland, OR to allow PGE to expand. Their goal is to begin this spring. This is 15 more acres than originally reported when this was first proposed.

What is the Harborton Reliability Project?

PGE wants to build new transmission lines from the new Harborton substation to Linton to Hillsboro. This lines up with where Intel plans to build a new semiconductor fabrication plant in the next five years, in addition to rebuilding their existing plant.
These expansions are largely aimed to serve the expansion of Intel and other big tech companies in Silicone Forest (which the city is also trying to expand). Each plant consumes as much electricity as 50,000 homes so the timing and location of this PGE update seems a little more than coincidental. Motivations aside, The Harborton Project started by proposing clear cutting a minimum of 6 acres through the park and putting up a line that would connect to the existing lines owned by the Bonneville Power Administration west of the current project area.

This project area is near the Harborton frog crossing, and it would demolish a wetland home to the red-legged frog that is federally recognized as a species of concern and protected in Oregon. While the initial "Project Area" designated by the PGE Harborton Fact Sheet only illustrated the first 6 acres to be cut headed west, it did not indicate how many additional acres of the park would need to be sacrificed to the southern leg of the project. A year ago, the PGE Harborton Project webpage passively mentioned an additional two phases to this project being in early planning stages but they craftily omitted that they had already obtained the permits for putting in underwater cables down the Columbia and Willamette to the Linnton substation.

PGE’s revised land-use application filed with the City of Portland proposed to clear cut 4.7 acres of 150+ year old Douglas fir and bigleaf maple trees and proposes to remove 5 white oak trees estimated to be 170-500 years old. In total, the proposal included the removal of 376 living trees, and 21 dead trees. It will permanently fill at least two wetlands and disrupts two streams that support multiple species of aquatic wildlife. That’s all when it was still 4.7 acres.

They slowly added more phases to their project as things progressed, which means more clear cutting of Forest Park. According to PGE, phase 5 of this project may also impact an additional 15 acres of Forest Park to the northwest and west potentially disrupting the Miller Creek watershed which contains salmon habitat. So it’s still unclear just *how much* they intend to clearcut, something PGE has been intentionally vague and confusing about from the early planning stages.

I will be updating regularly about this as things progress. #ForestPark #PGE #Portland

"PG&E customers face higher electric bills in March but rise is modest"

Modest? My March 2025 bill was 18.23% higher than my March 2024 bill or 20% higher than my February 2025 bill. Either way, a lot more.

And this is with me trying to save power when I can.
