How does #phenotypic #diversity relate to #genomic #evolution over #geological time?
In this #openaccess research article, Yang et al. find that species diversification (SD) in the Fagales (which includes oaks, chestnuts, and walnuts) appears decoupled from both, highlighting the multidimensional nature of SD evolution.

Fagales exhibit an “early burst” model of phenotypic disparification, with the morphospace being filled during the early radiation of the Fagales crown and its major families. Elevated levels of phenotypic evolution often correspond to hotspots of gene duplication, whereas species diversification is decoupled from both phenotypic and genomic evolution.

clustering diagrams show that P. pseudoglauca and P. wuana are generally morphologically similar. Additional genetic and phylogenetic analysis demonstrates that the genetic structure of P. wuana is extremely consistent with P. pseudoglanca, while ABBA-BABA and HyDe analysis shows that they all originated from the hybridization of Populus ciliata and Populus curviserrata.

Figure 1 from the paper. Legend: Figure 1: Three models of the distribution of reproductive trait phenotypes, demonstrated by distribution across a hypothetical population: A) A strict binary, for which all individuals are unambiguously grouped into one of two categories. Whereas some traits, like gamete size, operate this way, a binary does not accurately model the distribution of most phenotypic traits. B) A bimodal model, with most individuals falling around two peaks, or means, of a single sex trait with continuous trait variation, which align with the categorization of male or female. Depending on where the category boundaries are drawn, some individuals may fit both or neither. C) A multimodal model of sex as a collection of traits, represented as individual lines, that contribute to the overall sex phenotype. Each trait has its own independent distribution, which may or may not be bimodal, or coincide with other traits. In the example shown, two categories might conceivably be delineated, but doing so flattens trait variation within the system.
