Fox squirrel getting ready to rumble.

Foxes were the predominant species where I grew up in western Iowa. Here in eastern Iowa the gray squirrel seems to prevail in yards/woods. I only come across fox squirrels in wilder areas along the trails.

Photograph of an eastern fox squirrel sitting on a fallen tree or tree branch with out of focus brown and green foliage in the background. The squirrel is facing left but has its upper torso and head turned further to the right to look directly at the camera. The squirrel's tail is laid out behind it, and its feet are splayed across the trunk except its left foot which is grasping a bulge or lump on the fallen tree's trunk. Fox squirrels have brown-grey fur with orange-brown fur on their underbelly, neck and cheek. They have dark eyes, a triangular face that ends in a relatively large nose, rounded ears, a long bushy tail, and hand-like fore paws and larger rear paws both with sharp claws.

Standing room only.

This monarch made it thru to the end of the insect/arachnid season hereabouts. Hopefully it will successfully migrate🤞

Bye for now, friends, and see you next year👋 .

Closeup photograph of a monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) standing atop a cherry red zinnia with out of focus vague greens and grays in the background. Zinnias have large blooms that top long, stiff stems with large leaves. The flower opens from the outside and is made up of overlapping layers of petals that radiate from a center filled with florets. The monarch is facing left in profile leaving its right side visible and it has its proboscis inserted into one of the flower's orange-yellow florets. The monarch is standing with its long hind legs on the zinnia's petals, its mid legs atop the flower's conical center in front of it, and its short fore legs pulled into its body making it appear as if it is standing with its arms atop the floret "table" in front of it. Monarch butterflies have orange wings with black and white patterned edges and black veining, black bodies and heads covered with white polka dots and fine black hairs, large black compound eyes, two long, black antennae, and six black, segmented legs.

Pained lady from earlier this month.

Merely anecdotal but feels like it was a banner yr for #butterflies here.

Saw far more large species like monarchs & swallowtails & tons of fritillary, sulphurs, whites, gossamer-winged, etc...

Square cropped photograph of a painted lady butterfly (likely Vanessa cardui) atop a hot pink zinnia with vague grays in the background. The butterfly is facing left in fore-shortened profile. Its wings are lifted part way leaving the front left wing and the upper portion of its right back wing visible. The butterfly’s legs are spread across the tops of the flower's central florets, and it has its proboscis inserted into a floret directly in front of it. This zinnia has a daisy-like structure with long, pink petals extending from a central disk containing red and yellow florets. Painted lady butterflies have orange upper wings with black, white, and tan markings and spotting on the both sides of the wing, orange lower back wings with tan front sides with black, white, and tan markings and spotting on both sides, a long brown tubular abdomen and thorax covered in long fine tan hairs, a diamond-shaped head covered in fine tan hairs with two large brown compound eyes with darker spots, two long black and white striped antennae that end in white tips, six white segmented legs, and a long brown proboscis.

Photograph of a male red-bellied woodpecker perched on a large branch with out of focus branches, green foliage, and patches of blue sky in the background. The woodpecker is facing left with one eye visible and it is perched behind the branch leaving the left side of its body obscured. Red-bellied woodpeckers have off-white belly, chest, and neck feathers with a slight red blush on the lower belly, black and white back, wing, and tail feathers with a checkerboard pattern on the wings, a red-cap that extends from the beak to the shoulders, an off-white cheek with an orange patch below the dark eyes, black beaks, and dark grey legs and feet that are designed to grasp the sides of trees.

Pelican: Eeech, oooch! Man that water's cold, fellas! You should wait here till it warms up & I'll go grab us some fish.

Gulls: You just want all the fish for yourself.

Pelican: Nope, nope! Be right back with fish. I promise (🤞).

Photograph of a American white pelican standing in shallow water next to a sandbar in the Iowa River with a small group of 5-6 gulls standing in the water behind and near it and a larger group of gulls standing on the sandbar in the foreground with out of focus green foliage in the far left frame. The pelican is facing away from the camera and is standing in shallow brown rippled water that reflects the pale blue sky above. The pelican has its wings stretched out to either side and is standing with a slight tilt to its left. This gull species (likely ring-billed gulls) has white body feathers, grey wing feathers with black feathers on its wing tips, yellow-green eyes surrounded by partially visible red eye tissue, a yellow-orange beak with a black stripe around the beak near its tip, and yellow-orange legs and feet. There are many juveniles mixed in with older adult gulls. Juvenile gulls have white body that are mottled with brown and its eyes are dark and without the red. American white pelicans have white body feathers, black feathers on the edge and tips of the underwings, a long orange bill with a rigid top bill and a pouch like lower bill that expands to capture underwater fish, blue-grey eyes that are surrounded by thick, wrinkled, orange flesh, and orange legs and webbed feet.

I LOVE bumble bees but, honestly, they can be a bit shovey. I used to refer to them as the "school bus" of insects but I may have to change that to "city bus". Unfortunately for the hover fly is was in the wrong "lane" & had to retreat to a petal🙁.

#PhotoHour #macro #nature #Photography #AltText

Closeup photograph of a hover fly perched on the tip of a yellow sunflower petal and a common eastern bumble bee exploring the florets at the center of the same flower with vague dark greens in the background. The hover fly is in sharp focus in the upper right frame and the view is looking at the front of the fly with a foreshortened view of its body behind it. The bumble bee is in the lower left center frame and is out of focus. The view is from above looking at its back and legs. This sunflower species has long yellow petals that radiate from a center filled with yellow, brown, and green florets. Common eastern bumblebees have a black abdomen covered in fine black hairs with a yellow waist near the thorax, a black thorax covered in fine, yellow hairs, a black head covered in fine yellow hairs, six segmented legs, two large compound eyes and three simple eyes on its head, two short antennae, and transparent wings with black veining. This species of hover fly (possibly a large-tailed aphideater or Eupeodes volucris) has a smooth black abdomen with two gold oblong splotches on either side of the top of each segment, a black thorax covered is fine white hairs, a black head that is mostly made up of two large brown compound eyes, two small antennae, six brown segmented legs, and two transparent wings with dark veining.

Black and white photograph of the side of wooden elevated tracks leading to a railroad bridge that crosses the Iowa river. The tracks begin in the left frame and end in the distance at the bridge entrance near the right center frame. The tracks take up most of the left frame and diminish in size further into the frame due to the perspective. The tracks are elevated via large wood pilings not unlike a wooden boat dock with the pilings topped by large horizontal support beams just below the railroad ties and rails. The entrance to the bridge is in the upper right and the bride trails behind it. The bridge is made up of metal trusses that form a boxy structure with a flat top that encloses the tracks. Tall grasses, trees, and vegetation make up most of the right frame and a large tree is visible above the tracks in the upper left frame. Large squat silos and a tall white building that may be a corn storage facility are visible in the distance behind the bridge.

Wobbly tracks headed south.

Yesterday came across these tracks I hadn't photographed prior👍. I like to use b&w for man-made structures & people. I think it conveys a subtle (or not so subtle🤷‍♂️) mood that color often overwhelms.

#PhotoHour #bw #infrastructure #BlackandWhite #Photography #AltText

Black and white photographed of a set of railroad tracks bounded on the right by trees and undergrowth and on the left by a tall grass-covered bank with bushes, a few trees, and a line of utility poles that run along it. The tracks begin at the bottom of the frame and extend uphill to a point in the upper center half of the frame where they disappear behind the top of the hill. The tracks take up the bottom of the frame and angle up towards each other due to the perspective. The wood ties are dark and the area between them are filled with large rock gravel and the rails are smooth and reflective. Along the length of the rails there are small variations in the rail positioning so that they are slightly wavy rather than a straight.
