I work as a pastor in the Protestant Church in Bavaria, have a trans* biography (came out in 2013) and am interested in scientific topics – especially with regard to the climate crisis, but also with regard to how we can motivate people in a democracy to adopt a different lifestyle (in order to achieve climate targets). I am also fascinated by biology, solar energy issues (photovoltaics, battery storage, etc.), e-mobility and, of course, human rights worldwide.

I remember many people (mostly white folks) telling me that I'm crazy & have no idea what I was talking about - when I told them that while Global North kept ignoring opportunities for shifting to more #SolarPower & more #WindEnergy to move away from #FossilFuels as part of longterm #EnergyProducing plans/infrastructure, China was going to kick global ass with their full investments on wind & solar #AlternativeEnergy. I said that in 1996.

China became the world's leading installer of #photovoltaics in 2013. China surpassed Germany as the world's largest producer of photovoltaic energy in 2015 & became the first country to have over 100 GW of total installed photovoltaic capacity in 2017. As of 2024, Chinese firms are the industry leaders in almost all of the key parts of the solar industry supply chain, including polysilicon, silicon wafers, batteries & photovoltaic modules.

#WindPower remained China's 3rd largest source of #electricity at the end of 2021, accounting for 7.5% of total power generation.
China is forecast to have 1200 GW of combined #wind & #solar capacity by 2030 as part of the government's pledge to increase the share of non-fossil fuels in primary #energy consumption to around 25% by that year.

Both wind & solar energy industries in China have created thousands of sustainable jobs as well. They have boosted the Chinese economy from within.

On what has generally been a cloudy day, with occasional breaks allowing the sun to shine onto our driveway, and even though our F3800 battery energy storage systems have reached the 20% charge level to be kept in reserve for a sudden outage, the single 400W portable photovoltaic panel is keeping the BESS topped off to the point where we aren’t using any energy from the grid. This is amazing to @czds and me. 1/3

6/n The Anker Solix app does show some data, such as the amount of solar power being generated during the day. It’s easy to see where we adjusted the PV panels throughout the day. The peaks, at 250-270W, are where the panels are nicely lined up with the sun, shadow sharply straight behind the panels.

4/n The photovoltaic panel is more of a test. Is it really worth it where we live? The day it was delivered was cloudy and misting; we still got 100-200W from it. Today was bright and sunny, and we got 250-300W. Not bad from a panel rated at 400W.

Ist schon echt spannend, wenn man seine PV-Daten einfach mal in PowerBI auswertet und diese dann anfangen, Geschichten zu erzählen (wann lag Schnee, wann waren wir unterwegs, ...).

In dem Fall auch top, dass mein Anbieter mir Jahresreports als csv ausgibt für solche Spielereien)

Man sieht eine PV-Auswertung über drei Jahre mit Einspeisung, Verbrauch, Erzeugung, Netzbezug und Akku rein / raus.

If we consider degradation to 90% functionality as EOL, many of us should have been removed and replaced long ago. Me, for instance.

Anyway, here's a very nice explanation of how PV panels decline over time.

For my part I think that producing 9kW instead of 10kW is a feeble argument for the expense, hassle and especially footprint of replacement. Can"t squeeze 10% consumption reduction over the span of 20 years? What's the empirical record, outside of the AI Tulip Mania or other aberrations?
