#phreaks

For all my old #phreaks out there, I picked up this beauty on a recent trip to Oregon.

A 1940s Western Electric rotary phone, black bakelite edition with cloth handset cord.

Now this is a nice find!

I've been passed a scan of a notebook from the late 1950s containing details of all the #telephoneExchanges in the UK

This sort of information was used by #telephone enthusiasts (UK #phreaks) to navigate their way around the toll (trunk) network

There were various techniques to get yourself onto a trunk, but once you were there the dialling codes in this notebook would get you anywhere in the country!

Scan of a typewritten page from a notebook. It appears to have been spirit duplicated, and the typewritten text on the left of the paper appears in blue.

This page lists a number of exchanges from Dartford to Dover, along with a code describing how to reach that exchange.

On the right is a handwritten key, describing how to decode the number info.

t = Toll-A
k = Kingsway
f = faraday
(All exchanges in London that had known vulnerabilities at the time)

m = manual (indicating the exchange didn't have automatic equipment yet)

o = ?? answer on dialling (?)

Any old #phone #phreaks about? I’ve seen a couple of historical references recently to people #phreaking transatlantic calls from the USA to London, terminating the call on a payphone at Waterloo train station because it was in a busy area and was likely to be answered by a passer by.

Most of those #payphones are long gone, but

Does anyone have a record of what the #payphone number was?

@annmlipton Trivia: Back in the early 90s in #Sweden two things happened at once: We got toll numbers anybody could set up for some service, and #hackers (phone #phreaks) found an exploit for the public phone booths.

I happen to know for a fact that some of the more profitable toll numbers got there by paying people to abuse the phone booths (scamming the phone company) to call them over and over.

Very profitable.
