Portrait of little Dorian, a viewer request from one of my streams. The owner is curious about the #pigment PBk19 and so it's what I used to paint him. With additional goodie of PO49 for the bell.

Dorian is cute and adorable, it was lots of fun to paint him.

New Color Study video went live today, it's about pigment PV23 Dioxazine Violet, which is found in almost every basic set, in school, student grade and professional paints alike. It's a lovely purple, but what's more to it, the properties, how it mixes and how dangerous or not it is for our environment, you can see here:

Since it's hardly found as in nature, the colour is believed to be a rather modern addition to our painting kits.

Until now: Turns out that apparently already artists used blue pigment.

Thortveitite is the main ore of scandium.

Titanite is prized for its beauty, comes in different colours & is a source of titanium and hence titanium dioxide, used as a white pigment since ~1910. So, it gets my art vote.

Gets physics vote for trichroism- transparent specimens can show 3 colours depending on viewing angle. #MinCup25 #scicomm #artHist #pigment

Quote from the text at the website of the Museum of Modern Art on the painting Piet Mondrian, Broadway Boogie Woogie:
“In this painting, his penultimate, Mondrian replaced the black grid that had long governed his canvases with predominantly yellow lines that intersect at points marked by squares of blue and red. These atomized bands of stuttering chromatic pulses, interrupted by light gray, create paths across the canvas suggesting the city’s grid, the movement of traffic, and blinking electric lights, as well as the rhythms of jazz.”

Jackson Pollock’s Alchemy is a seminal work of abstract expressionism and is one of the early works from the drip period. The pigment palette is unusually rich and consists of organic and inorganic pigments.

The pigment analysis revealed the use of mostly oil-based paints” including titanium dioxide

Both wavellite and dioptase are sometimes made into jewelry but (though a rare pigment) dioptase has been on artwork used since Neolithic times so it wins my art vote!

See for instance Neolithic sculpture from Jordan, some ancients Asian murals & Russian religious icons.
