New video is out with another color highlight: Viridian PG18.
It's a wonderful pigment, almost glowing from within creating a magical vibe.

In the video I share as always mixes, swatches and a monochromatic painting, where you can see how the pigment actually behaves when painting.

New nerdy pigment exploration video just went live... because you know, it's never enough!

PB35 Cobalt Cerulean is an often overlooked pigment, which is actually lovely and has a place in a few of my palettes.

I swear... soon I'll be painting for real again... oh wait...

I must admit, that I really enjoy this series and writing about my experiences with those colors. Because I feel they need to be talked about more... not only in advertisements.

Painting of an egret in purple that is separating into pinks and blues. On top is a little box with paint that says Horadam Aquarell Wild Purple by Schmincke.

There are colors you like and there are colors like this...

Deeper look into Schmincke's Signature Edition 2025, today with Cologne Bridge Green, which quickly received a different name within my community.

PB35, Cerulean Blue, is gorgeous and beautiful and granulating.

I looked deeper into this one with swatches, mixes and some little paintings. If you're curious, you might like this read:

The article is free to read for all members (even free ones). All tips and support is used to power the watercolor database sunandcolors.com

Open sketchbook on a desk. The left side shows many labeled swatches of mixes with the pigment PB35, which is stated on top of the page. There is one swatch on black paper showing how transparent or rather opaque this pigment is and some washes. On the right side are 4 small paintings. One with a playful cat that seems to catch something in just light blue, one with a penguin, where this light blue color is mixed with orange. The mix greate browns and warm greys where the colors meet. Another one shows a purple butterfly, which is the result of the mixes of this light blue and a pink color. The last one is a mountain with blue sky above and dark browns on the bottom of the mountain from the brown that is mixed with the light blue that has been used before as a study.

Rust is something hybrid, something that grows and can overgrow. When I look at glass it pretends not to move, but when I look away it always feels like it starts to drip and leak. In my art practice, I have worked a lot with rust, which all started with my fascination for colors and pigments. For six years, I have been making my own pigments from plants that I pick in my garden or from wild plants, which I then use to dye organic fabrics or paint on paper. I also like to work with ceramics and glass, but I was never able to use these pigments in ceramics or glass because the high kiln temperatures - between 800˚C and 1240˚C - burn the pigments and turn them black. Rust, being inorganic, doesn’t get burned in the glass oven; instead, it transforms. So, it turned out to be applicable to both ceramics and glass. I search for rusty items as I walk and soak them in water as soon as I come home. The longer I leave the rusty finds in water, the blacker the rust becomes.

For those curious about PO49 (⬆️), it's Pigment Orange 49, a beautiful quinacridone that made stunning yellow golds, including a famous Daniel Smith color called Quinacridone Gold (which is still made, but is now a mix of other pigments).

The automotive industry is the primary buyer of pigments (the art industry only a small fraction), and they decided not to use it anymore, which means we all lost out! (Hey bicyclists, this is how to radicalize your artist friends!)
