Ice cold hike in Sagnlandet Lejre yesterday. We did 4 rounds and ended on 20 km. The area is really beautiful but it was almost to cold to enjoy so it's on my liste for this summer.
Heavy wind, minus 3 degrees and grey sky. I prefer colder weather with no wind to be honest - and a blue sky, please :)

The Twilight Forest by Gary Ferguson

In The Twilight Forest, Gary Ferguson brings readers on an expansive journey through the ponderosa forests of the Southwest both to mourn—and to celebrate—the forests that nurtured him. In warm and luminous storytelling, Ferguson weaves together the human and natural history of ponderosa, from its march across the West more than 10,000 years ago.

With their towering, cinnamon-colored trunks and dusky green canopies, ponderosa pine has long been a charismatic icon of the American West. Yet a quiet unraveling has begun: in the past decade, in a vast area from Santa Fe to the Sierras, more than two hundred million ponderosa have died. While some trees will survive in cooler places, scientists estimate that by mid-century less than five percent of the ponderosa in the American Southwest may remain. As the very character of this vast region shifts, what will be left behind? And how can we come to terms with such profound loss?

The first sunset of the year. Half a hour later than the previous one and from a different spot.

A photo of a sunset made in between of pine trees growing up on a dune on the seashore. The sun is still over the horizon but it's crossed by lengthy cloud. The sky there has a glowing triangle over the sun, and there's other two clouds over that shape an X-like cross. It glows too in the evening lights. Another cloud crosses the whole sky almost horizontally, but slightly declining on the right. It's pink over the pastel light blue sky behind. The left bottom half of the photo pictures brushes of one pine covered by snow on it ends. On the top there are three snowless brushes of another pine. The trees shape a semitransparent C-like frame around the sunset.

The image depicts a historical scene of Native American people gathered around tepees in an outdoor setting. The photo is black and white, suggesting it was taken many years ago. In the foreground, several individuals are seated or standing near horses, wearing traditional clothing that includes feathered headgear and blankets with intricate patterns. A prominent evergreen tree towers over them, indicating a natural environment possibly used for community gatherings.

There are at least three tepees visible in various states of assembly; some appear to be complete while others look like they're still under construction or dismantled. The ground is covered with what seems to be grass and earth, typical of an open field suitable for such campsites.

The background includes more trees that suggest a forested area near the campsite. A river can faintly be seen in the far distance behind these larger evergreens, adding depth to the landscape. This setting conveys a sense of rural life among Native American tribes prior to significant cultural changes and influences from European settlers or modern society.

The photograph is labeled with "2415-76 - 0" at the bottom left corner which could be an identification mark for cataloging purposes, often used in historical archives. The caption also mentions it's a dance scene of Flathead people around that time period (circa 1910).

Beautiful golden hour forest, White Memorial Foundation, Morris, Connecticut. September 3, 2024, 5:50 PM

Walking through a mature forest of stately pines and hardwoods. The ground is covered with a lush growth of ferns and small green leafy plants. A wide woods road arcs gracefully through the woods, its surface a soft golden brown carpet of fallen pine needles sprinkled liberally with fallen pines cones. The unseen sun is low in the sky ahead and to our right, casting lengthening shadows through the forest and splashes of golden late day sunshine. Glimpses of a soft blue evening sky are visible through the canopy.

The light is about to turn, as it always does. It will do so no matter if you try to help it along or not, but it's better for you if you assist a little. One day, these pine cones might be tall trees, and you can help them thrive, too. But first, enjoy the solstice. (Picture taken in Seattle's Discovery Park today.)

Five fat, happy-looking pines cones stand mostly upright in a row along the spine of a low branch of their tree on a rainy afternoon.
