#pkgbase

2026-01-16

@EnigmaRotor for clarity: I don't see pkgbase as strange, or dangerous.

It's sometimes misunderstood. Sometimes the big picture is not seen.

The 15.0 errata page, for example. The recent statement about major upgrades from 14.3 is wrong:

"systems installed with pkgbase(7) must backup and reinstall"

โ€“ that's unnecessary. An error in the errata page.

@gumnos #pkgbase should cut down a lot of the #FreeBSD steps moving forward.

@mj CURRENT is 16.0, not 15.0.

There should be no need for a SRV line in

/usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf

See /etc/pkg/FreeBSD.conf

Also: if you chose pkgbase (packages) in FreeBSD Installer, do not remove /usr/local/etc/pkg/repos/FreeBSD.conf

pkgbase: all packages deleted without deleting FreeBSD.

pkg-unregister(8) is our friend.

pkg version 2.5.0 is something special.

A software reason to be jolly for a festive season.

@mason you probably saw "experimental" in something earlier than the final release candidate.

Most users of FreeBSD Installer for 15.0-RELEASE will find the button for packages (not distribution sets) preselected โ€• the default.

<reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/>

From <reddit.com/r/freebsd/comments/>:

๏ผ‚pkgbase โ€“ it's huge, and cooking for more than a decade is mouthwatering, however the time for the Foundation and the Project to really blow their trumpets will be when the cookbook, tools, and conventions come together en route to 15.1. ๏ผ‚

I like that the Foundation is blowing a trumpet already ๐Ÿ‘

It's probably fair to describe the tools and conventions as a tech preview โ€• this includes the base meta packages for so-called sets โ€• but in my experience, the (non-meta) base packages are truly production-ready.

The pkgbase(7) manual page <man.freebsd.org/cgi/man.cgi?qu> can be corrected and improved, as can the FreeBSD Handbook and other parts of an inevitably sprawling cookbook.

Tasty.

I had taken my #freebsd #pkgbase install and tried to update with ports, since pkgs are never up-to-date (arm64), and I noticed you can't build ports from pkgbase packages, so that's.. interesting. Won't be doing that again if there's no way around that.

After maybe a decade of "pkgbase", I doubt that the official new phrase "freebsd-base" will catch on and become more popular.

It's five syllables, plus a hyphen, which breaks tagging in (at least) Mastodon.

๐Ÿฅณ daily driver upgraded to #FreeBSD 15.0 with #pkgbase (was using it already since 13.X)

Besides the minor adjustments regarding changes to the names of #pkg repositories, which were announced on the mailing lists, everything went just as expected.

The fact that we now have a repository with kmod ports that match base is :yayblob:
