I wasn't really planning on running yet another version of #Linux, but over the last couple of days I have been trying to find something interesting to run on an old 32bit laptop.
#HaikuOS keeps hanging after a few minutes (I have been trying to use it and keep it updated for a while as I loved #BeoS, but have run out of patience), #plan9front was too hardcore and you don't even get a Glenda boot logo 😞.
#ReactOS wouldn't even get to the installer when booting off CD (an old version worked in the past), and OpenBSD doesn't even come with a program launcher by default.
@q4os installed easily and worked fine on my old HP nc6230.
It has a nice lot of up-to-date software, a simple installer, nice themes, and seems stable so far 🥳
@ngate um......people still use #plan9 and #plan9front
don't make the same clueless assumption I did
I've tried to consume mouthfuls of info about #9front in the past few hours and I kind of dig it. There seems to be a rebellious and artistic aspect to it from its users that kind of draws me. I can't see myself using it daily as it seems to lack modern exploit mitigations....which it might not need but my monkey brain feels I need these things in place for peace of mind. I will definitely be playing around with it in a VM until I feel more comfortable. It feels like it could eventually replace something in my workflow. Very very cool OS.
So are hipsters using Plan 9 or derivatives? Can someone please explain the use case beyond this? This is a real question, not being facetious. #plan9 #9front #plan9front
@aeva @demofox @photex @jon_valdes @dougbinks These days I recommend the 9front variant. Modern device drivers, some innovation in the core system (the boot management is actually *nice*), and an active community.

@chakuari Don't be afraid and try plan9 under vmm, or even better, try a cpu server installation and use drawtern under OpenBSD. It's pretty easy to setup. If you need some assistance don't hesitate to contact the community. There are a lot of good documentation and lots of nice people to help you with #plan9front 🤗
Running #plan9front in my #thinkpad x280 for this entire year is going to be distractionless and super productive workstation. I dinnae miss the browser at all. Also I'm learning tons of new #computing things. There is no way back. Thank you to every single person and to the developers for this amazing experience. #plan9
@pfr cool theme and welcome aboard #plan9front
Using 9front for the first time and I really like it. There has certainly been a learning curve coming from Linux and BSD, but I'm getting there. Just need to set up Mail, Faces and an IRC client next.
So far I've just edited the theme, set up a couple functions, customised my riostart, edited the winwatch source code to reduce the padding etc. Everything I've done is pretty much in the acme window.

fiona (a raspi2) is still rocking!
Successfully sysupdate'd to current code, new kernel, libs and tools. This little low power machine is used for (distraction free) research tasks #9front #plan9 #plan9front
#Introduction heya~
i'm not one for long introductions but i feel like i should populate my account with something ;;;
just joined this platform to regain some of my sanity, meet like minded people and create a comfy space.
i love #cats #programming #plan9front #mushrooms #music and much much more <3
@alexandria #Plan9 is still around on the #SDF and #9Front (or #Plan9Front )
communities. Also wouldn't #Linux just be the for-#programmer desktops? Since we can tweak things however we see fit without having to worry about the restrictions of #Windows
