Yesterday I failed to help a coworker installing an older #Canon #scanner. Canon’s drivers were only for Windows XP and last updated long before the end of XP. Today’s Windows can’t do anything with the scanner. Device Manager can barely tell there’s an unknown Canon device present. 🤷♂️
With #Debian you just plug in the scanner and you’re done.
Just for fun, I decided to finally bite the bullet and resurrect ye olde macbook pro (mid-2010) with an SSD and Linux Mint XFCE. I had already upgraded it to 8Gb RAM ages ago. To complete this sacrilege, I hope to use the Chicago95 theme.
I'm not a fan of planned obsolescence, and I'm definitely missing actual ethernet ports on modern mobile hardware. This should be fun.

In 2025 we should have actually gotten laptops with 30 hour battery life in performance mode, but of course that's not going to happen because of sloppy innovation by all brands due to a no. of misdirected reasons.

FWIW, I am under the impression that the main chip (RTD2595LT) has died from heat, judging from the massive amount of silicone covering half the chip and half the heat transfer pad (and the circumstance that it is dead when powered). I would have thought of better quality control in LG's factory.

I don't like to waste tech, I can repair it and keep it running. I have a 2012 Nexus 7, it still works great, it's even on the original battery..
But it's running Android 4. It's capable, a good Tegra processor but all the software I use needs a newer Android version.
The tablet could run it otherwise... I can't even use it as a basic office device now.
They will tell me to buy a good one, a new one.. but why? It will be useless in years to come.

While I was waiting for the update to #QtCreator 14 to finish, I was wondering whether it would at all run on #macOS #BigSur. Turns out: it wouldn't (of course not). While the old releases are still available for download, downgrading isn't not that easy as many dependencies (especially the plugins) fail to load.
This is very sad.
