Uncle Tony makes some good points here about how car manufacturers are trying to eliminate the 3rd tier of car buyers by making throwaway cars that are unnecessarily difficult to repair.

In addition, the finance industry attached to dealerships is ahead of the curve on making the working class perpetually in debt, by rolling old debt into new car loans.

This is unsustainable on every level—for people, for the planet.

I have been just hit by #plannedObsolescence. A pair of noise cancelling headphones (#Sony WF-1000XM4) I purchased exactly 2 years and 2 months ago have started due to one of them discharging its battery way too quickly.

These cost over $300, so fuck you Sony.

On the fence about the future of my @homeassistant installation. I'm currently moving houses. The HA server is still in the old house. Thanks to #tailscale and the fact that all my domotics widgets are on wifi it doesn't really matter where it is, it controls both houses at the same time. It's running on an ancient 32-bit #Odroid HC2, installed by myself with pip install.

Recently, HA announced both of those things would no longer be supported. I can see the reasoning, can even sympathise with it, but it's not exactly clear to me what that means. They seem to suggest it is still possible to do what I do, I just don't get support. What does that mean? I don't use their support anyway, but does it mean I will get a sub-par experience? Will HA be crippled on 32-bit ARM and self-installed? Will the only way to have a good experience be to install their own linux distro?

Is this the beginning of the #enshittification of home assistant? Where soon you will have to buy a device from them to be able to run the software? And that device will only get 2 years of support before you have to buy the next one? If so, what alternatives are there. I do like HA, the amount of plugins is unparalleled. So maybe I should just buy a more modern Odroid and install their OS on it to be 'supported'?

I can't decide. I'll probably stick with the HC2 until they make it impossible for me to do so (or until it and the spare one I have also breaks).

Screw you Square, and screw the idea that a piece of hardware that works perfectly fine should have a "natural end of life."

screenshot of an email from Square:

Your first generation v1 device will stop receiving software updates after September 1, 2025.

Your v1 device will receive limited software support after Sept. 1

Your Square Register is approaching its natural end of life. While you’ll continue to receive critical software updates and bug fixes necessary to keep taking payments, new features will no longer be added after September 1, 2025.

It's like #plannedObsolescence on steroids.

But the really important thing to understand here is that this model is fundamentally *anti-progress*. It's an abandonment of the principles that have allowed us to no longer live in caves and develop agriculture, markets, science, health care, transport etc.

It is fundamentally regressive. And it is being rewarded by capital. It's much easier to do this than it is to work for progress, so guess what will not longer happen?

#PlannedObsolescence has entered the chat.

🔧 "Smart" dishwashers that are actually dumb. Connected fridges that spy on you. IoT washing machines that break when the wifi goes down.
When did we decide that EVERY appliance needed an app, data collection, and planned obsolescence through software updates?
Sometimes "dumb" appliances that just... work... are the smartest choice.

Planned Obsolescence or Happy Accidents?

After I've now had the second device with some design flaw that causes it to fail just slightly outside of the warranty period, I wanted to write down my experiences. Synology DS415+ and the Intel Atom C2000 clock signal issue Back in January 2015, I've bought a Synology DiskStation DS415+. It came with 2 years of warranty (later extended to 3 after Synology heard of the problem but didn't see any cause for action). It happily purred along 24/7 until it didn't. In late August 2018 - 6 […]

One cause of the problems of post-consumer waste, is manufacturers intentionally making disposable items instead of durable ones ("planned obsolescence"). Amplified by forced trade rules that stop governments rejecting low quality imports, despite the fact they end up paying public money to manage all the waste created (or charging the public "user pays" fees). While manufacturers, importers and retailers all make bank.

Before the great depression people weren't buying anything because of WWI overproduction that there were economists that were proposing putting an expiration date on everything and you were required by law to turn the item in and have it destroyed or be fined. Then the trade wars kicked off causing the great #depression causing the glut we had to explode. Now we "fixed" that problem with #plannedobsolescence

The #philips #3dprinting stuff seems nice on the surface, but we're talking about a company which pioneered #plannedobsolescence and quite literally invented it for electric toothbrushes, so let's see if they change any of the behaviors that actually matter or only ride on a marketing wave of replacement parts almost no one bought anyway

I bought some in the past. They were laughably expensive and really hard to find

E.g. a 3dprinted razor attachment would likely snag in your hair all the time

Google is ending support for 1st and 2nd gen Nest thermostats this October. They’ll still function—but without updates or cloud features, they could become security risks. Software shouldn’t decide when your hardware dies.

POV image of someone removing or installing a Google Nest thermostat on a wall. Their left hand is holding the thermostat itself, while their right is holding the wall plate to which it's attached.Google Nest thermostat split in half in someone's hands, with the wall plate on the left side and the thermostat itself on the right.

Whoever invented planned obsolescence should be taken out and shot.

I have a Samsung Galaxy A14, two years old. Can't replace the battery, which is dying. It wiped all my onboard music by bricking the two year old micro SD card. Now the screen doesn't wake unless I plug it in and unplug it, and even then I have to do a whole song and dance to get it to wake up.

I ordered the next model up, an A15, for only $80. Took almost a week to get here. I opened the box, had trouble getting the sim tray out with the little key thing, so I used a paper clip. The sim tray was tight so when I pulled it out, I lost my grip and it flew across the room somewhere. Our carpet is dark, dark purple so I couldn't find it because my cataracts are ripening and I can't see shit. Finally found it. Now I'm charging the damn thing and hoping I can get my service transferred without having to call tech support. Then I'll have to spend most of the day doing Smart Switch and checking for apps and settings I don't fucking want.

If I could afford a Pine Phone I'd get one at this point. I'm tired of having to get a new phone because something broke that can't be repaired. It's a waste of resources and money. And I only really use my phone for texts and messages, and Discord chat, because I can't fucking see so anything else is impossible.

/end rant (for now)
