Old English Plant Names
Most plant names in modern English have Latin (or other Romance language) influences. However, a small number of modern English plant names still retain a form of an old Germanic suffix, -el (from the languages of the early medieval Saxons and Angles).
netele - nettle
bremel - bramble
tæsel - teasel
þistel - thistle
mistel - misteltoe
hæsel - hazel

Finally opened this summer's daikon cilantro ferment and it worked! Pretty funky but in good way, with garlic and red onion. Red variety makes it deep pink. Daikon is a go to remedy for respiratory congestion. As allergies are kicking my butt badly, I will be chomping on this this heavily for some days, along with fire cider and Love Your Lungs Tea.
Have made it before but never dared eat it. Fermentation success!
Thinking of attending this virtual class later today, "Cultivating AntiColonial Herbalisms: an intro workshop for euro-descended settlers on n america" with rowan of hawthorn and yew. 90 min live and recorded, $33 (guessing US dollars).

Why does a $20 dose of ketamine turn into a $2,300 spiritual ceremony? My new blog, Pay to Pray, looks at the commodification of transcendence and why real spirituality shouldn't be reserved for the 1%. Read it here (630 words)

What a treat to hear a host on my fave herbal medicine podcast encouraging people to wear masks to protests to protect against covid and long covid. Lots of other good protest safety tips in here, plus some herbal ideas for street medics.
@Nikolas Oh man, I have been kind of obsessed with this plant since reading a history of contraception decades ago. How wild would it be to find silphion 2000 years after it was harvested to extinction?
@desafinado meanwhile, I have discovered that jewelweed is traditionally used to soothe bug bites, rashes and burns, including urushiol rashes like poison ivy. Crushed leaves applied topically.
An Ayahuasca retreat in Europe can offer the space and support for this reconnection. The plant medicine is not seen as a quick fix, but as a gateway: it opens the door to the inner world and invites participants to meet themselves with honesty, curiosity, and presence.

3/ 💊 Here's what makes mullein special:

Getting aquainted with plantain herb. Learned about it from herbalist in workshop couple years ago, looking for it to recognize since then. Recently saw big patch in a park, and confirmed with another visitor who knows medicinal plants. Good for scrapes and cuts and bug bites and rashes. Some put it on wounds. Which is great for me as I seem to be on Favorites menu for all the skeeters and ticks in this county, and have scratched myself scabby!
The park patch has some flower stems poking up. That made me wonder if it will produce seeds (surely it must), and how I might collect some to plant. So I looked up how to propagate. Thought I would share what I found! This plant is good medicine, which we will surely need as ~ all the evil~ going forward, useful food, and helps break up compacted soil and helps prevent erosion.

Which makes me think it might be good solution to another little park elsewhere, with newly raised walkway next to newly raised seawall by tidal river that floods now sometimes.
