Yareta (Azorella compacta) is a cushion plant found in the Andes which can live in relativley harsh conditions. The texture of the Yareta is notable for being a chartreuse colored velvet coat which can also flower.

What do you get when you cross a daisy with a thistle?
Well, nothing because they are unrelated and could never cross…but if they could it would probably produce something like this: Berkheya purpurea, a giant thorny South African daisy relative. Hardy to Zone 7 (but not around here where it’s more annual if left outside), this spiky monstrosity makes rosettes of bristly leaves up to almost 2 feet across, before sending up a stem to 3 feet tall that bears multiple blooms in succession, each one a ring of thin pale to rich lavender petals surrounding a puffy center ball of purple anthers and stamens. When in full bloom one plant is pretty impressive, but even more so is when multiple plants with several stems go off at the same time.

Still obsessed with how the hanging baskets have turned out this year 🤩 A few people have asked what the secret it, but I’m not going to pretend that I completely know what I’m doing 😂 … but I think the key is….

✅ Water retaining granules sprinkled in at the start with the potting mix (I just used whatever was cheapest!)
✅ A handful of slow release fertiliser mixed in
✅ Water every day! 💦
✅ A good old deadhead every other day (definitely with Petunias)✂️ 🌸
✅ A liquid feed every week (I’ve been using Micracle Grow)

Apart from that just winging it and hoping it lasts until the end of summer! 😂🤞🏻🌺🌼🪻🌸

Another plant that I have struggled with for a while that is FINALLY succeeding (mostly because I started these basically outside where they were going to stay indefinitely, which I should have done the first try…): Lotus tetragonolobus!
Frequently called the Winged Pea or Asparagus Pea, this Mediterranean native is a low-growing shrubby herb that produced brilliantly scarlet blooms and, like most legumes, helps fix soil nitrogen and so is often grown ornamentally alongside other plants (mine are currently in a squash pot). They are also edible however, the very young four-winged seed pods supposedly tasting like asparagus and used raw or cooked like other peas.
