A method <a href="https://advanced.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/adma.202510141" target="_blank">demonstrated by [Jackson K. Wilt] et al.</a> (<a href="https://seas.harvard.edu/news/3d-printing-soft-robots" target="_blank">press release</a>, <a href="https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.18095" target="_blank">preprint</a>) involves using a 3D printing to extrude two materials: one elastomeric material and a fugitive ink that is used to create pneumatic channels which are dissolved after printing, leaving the empty channels to be filled with air.</p>

Because the back side of the glider's instrument panel is so crowded, I have moved the vario speaker to the space under the turtle deck, aft of the wing spars.

To make connections easier, I added some 3.5mm audio jacks and plugs to the speaker box and the long cable running aft. (2nd photo)

The first photo shows one audio plug and two jacks. What's up with that?

The standalone vario has an audio output, and the glide computer also has an audio output. They use different styles of sound, programmable with slightly different parameters. Now I can more easily choose and change which audio output I want to use.

This should end my soldering work. Tomorrow I'll be working on (third photo) all the pneumatic connections from the three pressure probes: pitot, static, and total energy...to all the flight instruments that need these pressure signals.

In my hand are an audio plug and an audio jack. On the back side of the LARUS vario there is another audio jack. This setup allows me to select either the audio output of the vario, or that of the glide computer and send it to the external speaker.

And audio plug on the cable that runs to the speaker box, and an audio jack that runs to the instrument panel.

Two bags that hold brass 3-way and 4-way barb fitting blocks. They will be used to make multiple branching connections from the glider's pressure probes to various flight instruments.

Installing and connecting various glider instruments and avionics.

Electric wires are involved, and also pneumatic tubing.

This is the wiring harness for the transponder. The control head, to be mounted on the instrument panel, is already connected to the wiring harness. Two other electronic units will be connected to the harness: the transponder, and a precision GPS receiver that provides position information that will be part of the transponder messages.

The red and black wires are for 12VDC power. They will get connected to a 3 amp circuit breaker.

The controller head has a blue pneumatic tube that will be connected to the static probe...so that altitude can be reported in the transponder messages.

The small light gray box, with two pneumatic ports is the squat switch...to change transponder modes between 'on the ground' and 'airborne.'

The wiring harness for the transponder has various connections.

The small control head is already connected to the harness.

The blue pneumatic tube is for the static port connection...to provide air pressure/barometric altitude information that the transponder uses in its transmitted messages.

In the lower right is a small light gray box with two pneumatic connections. This is the squat switch. Mine senses air pressure created by velocity...so it needs a connection to the pitot probe and the static probe. (These are the same connections that an airspeed indicator uses.) When I'm going faster than about 35 knots, the squat switch closes, which changes the type of transponder message from "I'm on the ground" to "I'm airborne". (A traditional squat switch, on larger aircraft, is a weight sensor on the landing gear. When there is weight on the wheels...the transponder says "I'm on the ground"...and with no weight on wheels the transponder says "I'm airborne.")

Just used a palm nailer for the first time and…woah! 🤯

Combined with a portable compressor, it makes attaching joist hangers and other connectors so much faster. Just done a couple hundred nails in no time. With a hammer, my arm would be aching by now with all that awkward, overhead nailing.
