#Polarlights shooted 2 Weeks ago in Germany

Northern lights were visible over Berlin to the naked eye during the night of October 10/11 in spite of big-city light pollution—and to me in spite of red-green colorblindness.

I auto-adjusted levels and slightly increased the contrast in Darktable in this shot. Unfortunately my UV filter created a radial interference pattern that I don't know how to touch up and that's present on all photos I took that night. The filter got stuck on the lens from the cold air, so I couldn't quickly remove it.

Either way, seeing the aurora was a memorable occasion. You can bet I went to bed amazed and happy. When it was visible before in spring, it either wasn't as intense when I looked or I didn't know what to watch out for.

City neighborhood with several early 20th-century apartment buildings and a more modern industrial building at the bottom of the frame. In the sky there is a green sheen over the horizon and further up in the sky there are bright red curtains of light. Stars are visible, most notably the Big Dipper, as well as the blinking traces of, I guess, two airplanes.

There was nothing at midnight. But a full display across the sky from 1:30 a.m.

The camera enhances the colours - but the fields were very prominent to the naked eye as well, spread across large portions of the sky. It is always fascinating how the polar lights constantly change shape and intensity. They evolve and mutate.

Not a common occurrence here at lat 52N, in #Brandenburg west of #Berlin. The glow's of excited oxygen.

Diffuse polar lights stretch high into the sky above a nightly silhouette of dark trees and some houses, showing a strong color gradient from green through white to red.

The same scene as before but with a different pattern of green and red. These popular lights change shape and intensity all the time.
