I'm out of the clinical game (many years now), and so I'm out of all the loops. I'm getting CE invitations to learn about something called "polyvagal theory", apparently (?) asserting that vagal responses (or polyvagal? IDK) are involved in, and can ameliorate, psychological disorders.

Before I do a deep dive, does anyone have a one-sentence summary of what this is?

The Dolphin Interoception Method is a practice that helps a person become more embodied. I developed it and use it with clients to calm thinking and observe what happens in the body in a safe way. Also a good way to help people ‘unblend’ in the therapy model Internal Family Systems.

The Theory

I’m daring to hope I can continue to feel as good as I have this afternoon. Walking a little, I was so much more upright, lower back barely bothering me, I felt like I was leaning back. Once my chiropractor cleared stuff, I felt clearer in a grounded way that I have a few times.

The new, simple exercises based on and stuff are pretty good, clearing some stuff fast, though I’ve felt awful for a few days too, very tired and low, and flattened with it. But then, better.

Doing lots of research into nervous system health and polyvagal theory past 6 months or so, and have slowly come to realize I've been in a high-sympathetic (i.e. adrenalin-dominant) state since adolescence. When not in flight/fawn state, then collapsed in shutdown (that came much later, after my body had had enough). Now doing a lot of healing work, fascinating stuff! I'm interested in connecting w/ others in similar space. Say hello if you want! :) #polyvagal #chronicIllness #nervousSystem

Trauma
2/2
Our Polyvagal World definitively presents how Polyvagal Theory can be understandable to all and demonstrates how its practical principles are applicable to anyone looking to live their safest, best, healthiest, and happiest life.

What emerges is a worldview filled with optimism and hope, and an understanding as to why our bodies sometimes act in ways our brains wish they didn't.

Filled with actionable advice and real-world examples.

Trauma
1/2
The creator of the Polyvagal Theory explains the principles in simple terms that are accessible to all.

Since Stephen Porges first proposed the Polyvagal Theory in 1994, its basic idea—that the level of safety we feel impacts our health and happiness—has radically shifted how researchers and clinicians approach trauma interventions and therapeutic interactions.

I think currently #emotions are considered #psychosomatic.

The #brain is often not the best control of emotion. Thus variance in pain toleration and what not probably proves there is a limit unique human brains have in controlling pain, via the #mind only.

As a person living with #CPTSD, the only #therapy that worked for me are the #SomaticTherapies and there is a lot of research there. Dr. #Porges theories regarding #polyvagal we have found helpful. #SomaticMindfulness practices as well have helped me control emotions.

For #humans we believe the ability to control emotions depends on the type of emotion, and the skills one has gained to deal with emotions. #WillPower alone we think would be the least effective. And of course there are probably emotions we don't want to control.

@Richard_Littler @actuallyautistic most are. Those of us with ASD have many stress related issues. As Randy Newman said, “it’s lonely at the top”😉. I’ve been employing techniques and Buddhist practice on a daily basis. It is very helpful. Divorce from a narcissist was the MOST helpful though.

Those of us on the spectrum are very familiar with stress, anxiety, panic and general dysregulation. Here are some wonderful yoga techniques that will calm your over active vagal response. Sometimes we need to employ our body to deal with trauma response. We cannot always think our way out of it. I found this video extremely helpful.

Diving into "Anchored" by Deb Dana. Just wow. Ever read a nonfiction book and feel in your body what you're learning about? Highly recommend. #polyvagal #TraumaIformedCare #neuroscience
