#InvasiveCarp

"Carp are a family of fish native to Europe and Asia. Common carp (#CyprinusCarpio) has been in the United States for over 100 years. The common carp is considered a nuisance fish or a pest fish. See Species Profile: Common Carp (Nonindigenous Aquatic species Database) for more information.

"The newest invaders, #BigheadCarp,#BlackCarp, #GrassCarp, and #SilverCarp that originated from Asia are collectively known as invasive carp or #AsianCarp. These invasive carp species are causing issues in the #MississippiRiver and surrounding waters. Invasive carp are fast-growing and prolific feeders that out-compete native fish and leave a trail of environmental destruction in their wake.

"The four types of invasive carp currently found in the U.S. were imported into the country for use in #aquaculture #ponds. Through flooding and accidental releases, black, grass, bighead and silver carps found their way into the Mississippi River system. The Mississippi River system is like a giant freshwater highway that has given invasive carp species access to many of the country’s rivers and streams."

The flag iris seeds are bursting from their pods. There should be a few more plants in the pond next year. #SeedSaving #SolarPunkSunday #Ponds #Gardening #Allotment

Two yellow seed pods on a flag iris have opened to reveal a number of brown bean like seeds. Maybe about twenty seeds per seed pod. The seeds will fall into the pond and start their germination journey for next year. One of the seed pods is only just starting to open with the seeds still in a stack. The other seed pod has opened fully and has peeled back almost banana like to reveal the seed pods inside.

Even a small pond is worthwhile. There’s been so much insect life in and around this little pond that was put in earlier this year. Spiders, hoverflies, flies, solitary bees, newts, frogs. #Pond #Ponds #Biodiversity #Gardening #Allotment

A small container pond with green algae and various pond plants flag iris, brooklime, bog bean, lesser spearwort, hornwort and water violet. There’s a gentle slope of stones down from one end towards the middle. The pond is surrounded by various flowers. Orange marigolds, white alyssum, borage that’s gone over, pink cosmos and some purple bowles mauve.

Astonishing if it's true that 1000 year old seeds are germinating when the ponds are re-made...

Nature is awesome!

Now that we have had our brief bit of fun with the #poolpond, it’s time to drain it so work on completing it can continue! It took just over 12 hours for my little spare pond pump to empty the main pond of about 80% of its water.

It will be empty by morning. I will empty the filter and intake bay as well just to clean everything out. The movement of the past couple weeks through the system will have loosened up a bunch of the gunk still on the various rocks in the filter so a full pump out should remove all that.

I will then concentrate on finishing the piping in the bottom of the main pond for the intake for the second pond and the “periscope” for the bottom returns.

Then I can work on building the rock wall to line the inside of the pond. Or at least experimenting to see if it will work at all!

If it *does* work and I have enough rock to at least start on the bottom layers of the inside wall, then I’ll be able to achieve another milestone: placing the final pebble on the bottom. Important, because that will prevent any groundwater from infiltrating and causing the rubber liner to bubble out.

Really really want to get past that mark before the autumn rains come! For obvious reasons! ☔️

Other jobs that need to be done before winter:

- finish the manifold for the second pump to distribute water to the sprayers and filter and figure out how and where to house and conceal it.

- Dig the electrical trench from the house all the way around the long side of the pond to the back tool shed so we can start wiring it in.

- Clipping the wires on the pumps and adding extension wire to them so they can reach said electrical supplies.

- permanently shore up/modify the borders of the ponds where they were found to be low.

- make a few other minor terraforming modifications for the stream and some of the edges so the water goes a little more where I want it to and a little less where I don’t.

A view of the Housatonic Valley from Lions Head, Taconic Mountains, Connecticut, just as the outer bands of Hurricane Erin were withdrawing. August 21, 2025, 2:02 PM.

We are on a mountain standing atop a rock outcrop of light gray rock marbled with darker gray. We are looking out over the tops of some pine trees and hardwoods. We are looking across a broad valley hundreds of feet below filled with the greens of late summer. Most of it is covered with deep green forests broken by emerald green pastures and farm fields. A pair of almost adjacent ponds are to the left of our view. A line of blue green hills and mountains runs along the far horizon. A few smaller wooded hills are scattered over the valley floor. A morning of clouds is just giving way to bright sunshine. The sky is a soft blue filled with lines of retreating clouds.

The opening of the new display greenhouses at Cologne Botanical Garden (Flora) has been repeatedly postponed – as is customary in Cologne. Now it may (!) finally happen this autumn.

How the big pond looked on my brief visit to the allotments yesterday 😍 I still have to pinch myself to believe that I have private access to such a wonderful location just a 5 minute walk from my house! 😎 #Allotments #Ponds #Kent #England

A view of a large pond on a late summer's afternoon. The clear blue sky is reflected in the slightly wind-ruffled water. The trees and shrubs surrounding are showing signs of their autumn colours 😍The view of the pond in the other direction (I'm standing in the middle of a wooden footbridge). Allotment gardens can be seen climbing the hill above the far bank 🪏🫜🧄👨‍🌾

Lots going on in the big pond today - It was hard to know where to look! 😅 Here the large koi is disturbing a mixed shoal of mainly roach, I think 🐟🐟🐟🐠 #fish #freshwaterfish #ponds #Kent #England
