Turning to the . the name of an I had back in the late 90s (maybe early 00s?).

I've looked through pages of image search results. Poured through eBay. Toured the & articles & forums.

I mocked up what I remember. Device was this rounded, pear-ish shape. That soft matte black plastic. Screen on the top. Had buttons on the top edges. I think there was an SD slot at the bottom. Maybe buttons on front below screen?

Any insight?

Screenshot of four AI-rendered images using the text prompt "An Apple Walkman" made by Stable Diffusion. The devices pictured look mostly like 1960s portable reel to reel tape machines or microcassette players. Altho they have wires coming out of them, none of them seem to have headphones. They are mostly grey in colour. One of them almost looks like an iPod Classic if it was drawn in the sand and squished down to about 2/3 its normal height. A bizarre 1950s-looking microphone sits next to it.Screenshot of four AI-generated images based on the prompt "An Apple Walkman" as generated by Dall-E. They all look like iPhones attached to parts of actual apples. One of the phones seems to have bisected its apple and the apple's stem is now growing out the side of the iPhone. One of the iPhones has a pair of earbuds attached to it, along with a third earbud that isn't connected to a wire, but definitely is not a wireless earbud. Three of the apples are red; one appears to be a sickly Granny Smith, a pale green.

In the year 2013 when most of the world had embraced the MP3 player, #Eminem was repeatedly spotted in public listening to a CD player.

Three photographs of hip hop artist Eminem from the year 2013. Altho dressed differently in each photo, he wears the same pair of black Beats wired headphones plugged into a black portable CD player. Disgraced Detective Chief Inspector John Luther (Idris Elba) receives a disturbing message from a serial killer via a broadcast on a Grundig Party Boy 100 portable radio (1981) in "Luther: The Fallen Sun" (dir. Jamie Payne, 2023)

A charismatic, tough, but dejected looking early middle-aged black man stands in a prison cell holding a portable radio. He wears a blue longsleeve shirt buttoned only at the collar. He has short black hair and a goatee. A dirty fluorescent light shines above him to his left, and a small window with bars on it is behind him.Closeup of a Grundig Party Boy 100 portable radio. It is primarily shades of grey and has a single large speaker on the left, a carrying handle on top, and a large analog readout for tuning stations that stretches from top to bottom and takes up the remaining side of the device to the right of the speaker. An orange physical tuning needle is tuned to FM frequency 65.8.

#Cassette #Tape

Our #ObjectOfTheWeek is a #NewAcquisition: The 2nd MP3 Player in the World, the Diamond Rio PMP300 (Sept 1998, after S.Korea’s MPMan in March) – the 1st commercially successful MP3 player.

The Rio provoked the 1st RIAA lawsuit trying to kill MP3s (they lost bc their suit was based on the misunderstanding that the Rio was a recording device).

Even after 25 years, our Rio still plays the (terrible) files on its built-in 32MB storage.
#diamondrio #pmp300 #mp3player #mp3 #90s #portablesound

Our Diamond Rio PMP300 sits under a glass vitrine here at Museum of Portable Sound Laboratories. It is a black plastic device, with a small LCD screen above a circular control interface featuring nine separate buttons. A superfluous yet endearing label that simply says the word "DIGITAL" is at the top centre directly above the LCD screen; the word is written with a reflective metallic material that almost looks like rainbow-reflecting pixels when you tilt the device back and forth: a completely analog method of representing the concept "digital".A closeup of the RIo under glass. You can't see them, but on the top of the device are three more buttons: MENU, MODE, and INTRO. The INTRO button plays the first 8 seconds of every track, since the LCD screen is unable to display any track title information, so this feature allows the user to quickly scan through everything to find their favourite track. Our Diamond Rio PMP300, out from under the glass and being held in the right hand of our Director and Chief Curator. There is a pair of headphones plugged into the Rio's headphone port, and the LCD screen displays information, showing that it is turned on and working. There is a volume indicator, an arrow indicating that sound is playing, a large '01' which means it is playing the first track on its storage, there are minutes and seconds indicated next, a battery strength indicator, and a readout of what fidelity the MP3 file has been ripped to – this one says 128kbps, which nowadays is considered low quality but back in 1998 this was allegedly "CD quality", which was a lie.

The Toshiba RT-8710S Stereo Radio/Cassette #Boombox (1979) had a trick up its sleeve: you could pop the handle off, unlatch the speakers, and turn it into a spatial home stereo system (that could even be used as a receiver for your turntable)! This versatility, however, led to some design sacrifices – as the Radiomuseum.org photo of the device's rear end in the third image below testifies, it was pretty nice to look at as long as you didn't spin it around.

#PortableSound #1970s #Toshiba #Stereo

Two brochure-perfect photos of the front of the device. The top shows it fully formed, the bottom shows its speakers detached and a turntable plugged in.A 1979 brochure in its entirety for the device. The text is in German. It shows four different configurations of the boombox's detachable speakers (one without them altogether, obviously intended to be listened to via headphones like a Walkman).Top: a very impractical configuration, this shows the detachable speakers standing straight up on top of the horizontal receiver/cassette deck portion, with the handle attached to the top of the speakers – and a massive gap of nothing between the speakers, which looks like the handle will pop off the second you try to pick it up.

Bottom: a photo of the back of the device while the speakers are clipped onto the receiver at the bottom. It looks aesthetically awful and also flimsy. No wonder the brochures never showed the back.
