Martin, proprietor of the Grand-Bouillon Restaurant du Chalet where Van Gogh was a regular, was likely the model for this portrait. He allowed Van Gogh to display his works in his restaurant, but he claimed that they caused his customers to lose their appetite, which led to a fallout. The portrait was never given to him.

Suite de mes cours aux Beaux-Arts de Paris : travail sur le corps puis le buste dans "la Chapelle" dont une pause d'une heure où j'ai pu (dû !) prendre le temps de faire un vrai travail sur les ombres et j'ai pu voir des résultats !
