“Two-Spirit, One Motion”

Genre(s): Environmental Portrait Photography, Documentary Photography

An Indigenous dancer performs at an outdoor powwow, captured mid-dance while balanced on one foot with the other leg raised behind them. They wear vibrant traditional regalia featuring a bright red base garment decorated with geometric patterns in blue, yellow, and turquoise. Large lime-green feather bustles extend from their arms and back like wings. The dancer holds decorated items in both hands and wears a roach headdress with radiating feathers. They perform on grass with seated spectators visible but blurred in the background. The photograph captures dynamic movement and cultural celebration at the 2-Spirit Powwow in Toronto.

Ooh, marvellous!! I have the local pow wow schedule saved. Looks like the nearby ones start in a couple of weeks. One of my favourite parts of summer. Excellent to experience one on #NationalIndigenousPeoplesDay

A three-quarter portrait of a jingle-dress dancer poised on a grassy powwow arena. The dancer has sleek hair pulled back, small tattoos of dots above each eyebrow, and a stylized bird motif tattooed on the throat. They wear a black satin dress trimmed with lace and rows of black metal jingles around the yoke and skirt. A red floral shawl is knotted at the waist, and their right hand rests on the hip. In soft focus behind are other dancers and festival spectators under colorful canopies.A mid-shot of a powwow dancer captured outdoors against a pale blue sky. A beaded headband in a blue-and-white checkered pattern crosses the forehead, with two round medallions over each temple linked by gold-tone bead chains that drape across the face. Atop the head sits a tall black-and-white porcupine-hair roach. The dancer’s eyes are closed, mouth slightly open with tongue visible, and arms are lifted in mid-motion.A wide-angle scene of a flag procession at a powwow. In the foreground, a man in a red patterned shirt, black hat, and sunglasses holds a tall wooden staff topped with antler tines and colorful feathers. Behind him stand several flag bearers holding a cluster of tall poles: rainbow pride flags, a white banner dotted in Two-Spirit colors, a purple tribal banner, and other flags blowing gently. Behind the flags is a line of dancers in colorful regalia and a background of green trees and seated onlookers.A full-body view of a jingle-dress dancer walking on a grassy field. The dancer wears a cream-colored dress covered in rows of silver cone-shaped jingles suspended from orange-and-black patterned ribbon. Scalloped cuffs on the sleeves and hem feature matching floral trim. A square red cloth bag with gold-leaf appliqués and colorful flowers hangs diagonally from the shoulder. White leggings and beaded moccasin boots complete the outfit. In soft focus behind, other dancers in dark and red regalia and spectators under canopy tents can be seen.

Easing my way back into the #Doomposting (and boy, there's a lot of #DoomAndGloom out there). I did spend some quality time at the ##MétisOfMaine #PowWow today, and made some new friends -- including a fellow Two-Spirit person, who recognized that I, too, was one. We talked about what to wear when dancing (they were wearing both a ribbon shirt and a ribbon skirt). I mentioned that I felt called to wear a ribbon shirt (with pants), but also use a shawl -- because as a Diindiisi (Ojibwe word for "Blue Jay"), I needed wings when dancing. They totally understood where I was coming from. Hung out with a talented seamstress (a different one than the one who made my shawl), and talked to her about decorating my shawl with Blue Jay colors, along with the Métis symbol, and she should have the work done by the next PowWow. Psyched!

A brightly colored 2-Spirit Pride flag ripples on a metal pole against a clear pale sky. Seven horizontal rainbow stripes (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) bear a central white circle enclosing a stylized feather emblem. A single real feather is tucked into the pole near its base.A dancer leaps in mid-step on green grass, wearing a black shawl patterned with tiny silver stars and long black-and-silver ribbon fringe that streams outward. The matching black skirt also features a star and planet print, and the dancer wears white ankle socks and black leather moccasins. Three jingle dancers stand in a row before brightly colored canopies. From left: one wears a black, purple and pink jingle dress with layered bell fringes and white fur accents; the center dancer wears a brown dress with a heart-shaped belt buckle, jingles at wrist and waist level, and carries a red handkerchief; the right dancer wears a blue floral dress with yellow cone bells and fur trim. All have feathers in their hair and hands on hips, poised to dance.A smiling dancer leans forward in dance on a grassy field, wearing a black wide-brimmed hat trimmed with beads, mirrored green sunglasses, a purple-and-yellow fringed shawl over a black shirt, a purple sash at waist level, and jingle-bell ankle cuffs over black fur mukluks.

The more I listen to it, the more I would love to hear The Halluci Nation or DJ Shub do a mashup of Ay Yola's "Homay" with something from Canada (?Northern Cree?).

I went to a powwow last weekend, but unfortunately I ended up being in too much pain to stay for long. What I was able to see was nice, though.

In our region the powwows are small compared to the massive event in NM. We don't have enough women to have a separate buckskin competition, much less a Northern and Southern style one. Here's a clip of the women's northern buckskin competition. Look at the movement of the fringe on their regalia.
These women are highly skilled because they all seemed to keep that fringe moving effortlessly. 5/5

People are generally familiar, I think, with powwow dances: men northern and southern traditional, women northern and southern traditional, men grass dance, men fancy dance, women jingle, women shawl, women fancy shawl, women northern and southern traditional, women buckskin and men chicken dance. I caught a good clip of the women's fancy shawl and they were so beautiful. 4/5

The grand entry took 20 minutes! As they approached the end, there were so many dancers that the floor of the coliseum could no longer be seen. This was the first day and the drummers/singers were in competition. They were lined up on the two sides. On the second day the drummers were in the middle and by the time the dancers entered, they could no longer be seen. This photo is from day 1 at the end of entry. 3/5

This photo is towards the end of grand entry on Day 1. There are so many dancers in the coliseum that the floor can no longer be seen. The dancers are wearing regalia that represented not only the dance they were going to compete in, but also their families and tribal affiliations. You really cannot make out too much individualization among the mass of people on the floor. Needless to say there are tons of feather, beads, sequins and fringes being worn. There has to be thousands of dancers on the floor.

The powwow took place at the Tingley Coliseum in Albuquerque NM. The first photo is at the beginning of the Grand Entry. It opened with a dancer holding the eagle staff. Behind him are the war bonnets, then the outgoing Miss Indian World, and the head man and woman dancers. The coliseum floor is empty at this time. 2/5

This photo is of the beginning of the Grand Entry of the dancers at the Gathering of Nations Powwow. The dancer holding the eagle staff is waiting to start out into the coliseum. The eagle staff is held up and it has a war bonnet on the top and the pole is decorated with red and tan patterned cloth and leather fringe. He is wearing regalia that is a green tunic on top and red pants. Behind him are the five men in war bonnets and some of their regalia is buckskin with fringe. Just behind them a little to the left are the head male and female dancers. Both of very detailed regalia.

Some cleansing for the time lines today. Went to #GatheringOfNations Powwow over the weekend. I've been attending powwows for nearly my entire life and this weekend was unlike anything I've ever experienced. The energy of the dancers and drummer/singers was amazing. And it was so clear this was an event for folks to celebrate each other. Visitors were welcome but it was not about them. Sharing 2 videos and 2 pics below. 1/5
