Is Grimwild the next Dungeon World?

When Dungeon World was released in 2012, it slammed the door to Powered by the Apocalypse open so hard it broke the hinges. By taking the recipe crafted in the Baker House and mating it to the memetic power of Dungeons and Dragons, suddenly everyone could see what was so powerful about PbtA. Of course, Dungeon World was hardly a perfect recipe. Using the architecture of ‘moves’ established in PbtA but keeping both the stats and classes of D&D made for an incomplete match, and some of the mechanical choices made to get the two to pair up have received more significant criticism now that the design community has had a good decade and a half to really figure out what PbtA is. Had fun playing The Spawl last night and certainly like the way ttrpg games run using the Powered by Apocalypse system.

It gave me an idea how to run Kult: Divinity Lost which uses a similar system.

I think I'm done reading metro: #otherscape, the sister/successor game to #CityOfMist. Managed to keep interest and focus up until I got to the #gamemaster chapter. Then the wordbarfing finally exhausted me. So. Many. Words.

Cool system. Cool setting. Too wordy core book.

#TTRPG players and GMs, what are you currently playing? What do you wish you were playing?

Currently running

- #Pathfinder 1e. Not a fan of the crunch, but it's for my wife
- Taking a short break from #MasksANewGeneration, a #PoweredByTheApocalypse #PBTA supers game but ready to dive back in to the GM seat at a moments notice
- #Trinity #Adventures game. Character creation was a headache compared to other #WOD #WorldOfDarkness games but the characters are fun
- Our #MonsterHearts2 game should be starting up again at some point

Wish I was playing
- #13thAge for the amount of say players get in world building
- #GURPS for the complete characters you get after creation, which CAN be a real chore
- #D6StarWars as it was one of the first games I played and I really like the system
- #CastlesAndCrusades #CNC for the old school style with modern sensibilities
- #VampireTheMasquerade or #VampireTheRequiem. I've got a #VTR campaign I want to run at some point, but I don't know if/when I'll get to it. A long term obsession I haven't had the chance to play in 15-20 some years at this point
- #StarTrek #LastUnicornGames. I like the way they handled life/career paths

Over 10 years ago at this point, I started running D&D for kids in a local ice cream retro arcade pinball shop, and tonight one of them ran us through a playtest of an #RPG they designed themselves, a #PoweredByTheApocalypse game inspired by #WorldOfHorror.

It’s been great seeing these kids grow up with games and then come back to the table with their own.

One of my players' characters frequently finds out information by doing extensive research. This comes up often enough that I feel like it should have a move, but I haven't found a good way to frame it

Powered by the Apocalyse (PbtA) style moves took a long time for me to wrap my head around. It was a huge shift from "I do an action" style play—they might be passive or reactive for my character, which didn't fit a "pattern" in my brain.
