🇨🇦 Canadian Word of the Day: Gitch/Ginch

Primarily heard in Western Canada, 'gitch,' 'ginch,' or 'gotchies' are slang for underwear. This quirky term is thought to have Ukrainian roots, derived from the word 'gatky' (ґатки), which means pants or briefs. Its adoption into prairie slang is a direct result of the linguistic influence of Ukrainian immigration on regional Canadian English. #Canada #CanadianSlang #WordOfTheDay #Prairies

Three pair of men's underwear. Why is a single unit of pants called a pair? English is weird.

I guess it’s .

Bulrushes and long grass covered in fresh frost. The sky is mostly bright blue but with some haze near the sun, which is low. A sliver of sun is visible in the top left corner, and below it is a grain elevator.

Finished reading 'Sea of Grass' by Dave Hage and Josephine Marcotty. A classic environmentalist arc of telling all the ways in which the prairies were destroyed and the glimmers of hope that they may come back in some small denuded way.

This is a book that I think will resonate well with people who live on the prairies. There is a beauty to the endless sea of grass that is hard to grasp and Hage and Marcotty do it justice.
