Rossetti, Day Dream--unfinished & finished versions. Portrait of Jane Morris. 1855.#FediArt #Preraphaelites #Painting

A masculine woman sits in an arbor. Her graceful hand holds a branch. Her other hand lays open in her lap beside a flower and open book. She has a pensive, melancholy look on. her face. Everything but the hands, face and flower are in colour, everything else is sketched in black an white. The same painting but the woman sits, full length and everything is painted in lush, green jewel hues.

Melody, Kate Elizabeth Bunce, 1895. Bunce's use of patterning and embellishment is so fascinating. Seen here on every surface, including that necklace. #MastoArt #Inspiration #Preraphaelites

A stylised portrait of a young white woman with dark hair. She plays a lute and is richly dressed, her green overdress embroidered with flowers. behind her a vase overflows with flowers and a concave mirror in an elaborately detailed frame, reflects the distorted interior of a chapel with stained glass. The woman looks directly at the viewer, her green eyes devoid of emotion, the left eye is lazy and strays slightly.

Storm Spirits, Evelyn De Morgan, 1900 This is #Orkney weather made glam. Right now we are at the centre of the painting--a moment of calm. Lightning has snakes in her hair; mythologies world wide have linked the snake with lighting or a 'serpent of light" .#Preraphaelites #WomenArtists #FediArt

In this painting the element of rain, thunder and lightning are personified as strong, beautiful female spirits, causing chaos and turbulence in the sea below them. To the left, dressed in yellow, is the spirit of Rain pouring grey water from a never-ending vial. To the right, Lightning – a red-winged figure with winged feet, hurls lightning bolts into the storm. At the top centre is the spirit of the Thunderclouds, dressed in dark blue with her dark wings and draperies merging into the thunderclouds around her.

However, in the centre of the image, is a small oasis of sanctuary, away from the pandemonium of the foreground, which offers a sense of hope for a calmer future. The painting was executed in the middle of the Boer War and as such, it can be read as a symbolic depiction of the chaos of war and hope for a return to peace. Text from the Evelyn De Morgan website.

A Study, in March
John William Inchbold (1830–1888)
Ashmolean Museum, Oxford

It is generally agreed that this was the painting exhibited as 'A Study, in March' at the Royal Academy, London in 1855 and inspired by lines from William Wordsworth's 'Excursion', book 1:

“I returned,
And took my rounds along this road again
Ere on its sunny bank the primrose flower
Peeped forth, to give an earnest of the Spring.”

#Spring #march #flowers #art #PreRaphaelites #hope #seasons

"The primrose and harebells in the foreground and the ewe and two lambs on the ridge, herald the arrival of spring, though the trees are still bare, their branches picked out in sharp detail against the blue sky. The microscopic detail epitomises the Pre-Raphaelite approach to landscape painting, which sacrificed perspective to careful finish." It has the appearance of a full colour photograph in style and composition, rather than a painting.

“Alice Boyd was one of the most talented women in the Pre-Raphaelite circle….Boyd painted several watercolours and oils outside her studio in the grounds of Penkill….The inscription on the original mount of the present work: Steps to the Studio, Penkill/Steps that lead to pleasant days/And work that needs nor blame nor praise, reflects a happy and productive working environment. The elaborately drawn peacock and roses and foliage, reminiscent of William Morris wallpaper, bear testament to the emerging Aesthetic movement.”

The artworks he was reminded of were Ophelia by John Everett Millais because of the lush flowers and plants and Pandora by John William Waterhouse because of the dress. We tried out some poses inspired by some of Waterhouse's paintings and chose one where I'm looking wistfully at the sky. Here is a series of other contenders:
x
2/3

Three full-length portraits of a woman with long dark hair and red lipstick, side by side with slight differences in her pose. Wearing a deep blue dress with long sleeves and a plunging neckline, she stands with her hands loosely clasped at waist level in a lush garden in front of purple flowers, with a young fruit tree to her left behind her and a cloudy sky in the background. In the left version she is looking slightly to the right, in the middle version she is looking to the right towards the sky in profile, her head tilted slightly back as if in thought, in the version on the right her head is in the same position, but with her eyes closed.

If you've got a chance to get away, take a look at Dennis T. Lanigan's review of "Preraffaelliti Rinascimento Moderno [#PreRaphaelites Modern Renaissance]" at the San Domenico Museum in Forli, Italy (on till the end of the month). Sounds wonderful! victorianweb.org/painting/prb/

Lovely view of the low buildings of the museum, which partly uses a church setting for its displaysThe spacious Burne-Jones room with its deep blue walls hung with a variety of his paintings.
